I might take it more seriously if the narrator didn't sound like the guy in the Coors Lite commercials.

Yeah, I kept waiting for the sales pitch.KMcK wrote:I might take it more seriously if the narrator didn't sound like the guy in the Coors Lite commercials.
It's not a new theory, and it's probably true to an extent - but I rather expect that bread (flatbreads) came first, and beer was more of a lucky discovery that may or may not have preceded leavened bread.
Bread-making is why we had to stop being hunter-gatherers and become farmers; but the 2-4 is what made it impossible to return to being serious hunters

I don't disagree, but I firmly believe that porridge came before either bread or beer. Its basically the forerunner of both. One person probably dropped some on a hot rock by the cooking fire (and it tasted good) - another made a watery one and forgot about for a few days (and it tasted good).derek wrote:It's not a new theory, and it's probably true to an extent - but I rather expect that bread (flatbreads) came first, and beer was more of a lucky discovery that may or may not have preceded leavened bread.

I'm sure that's true - but did you have to stop being a hunter-gatherer to make porridge. North American hunter-gatherers harvested rice (and probably other grains - but I know about wild rice). Once you start being a baker or a brewer (on any significant scale), you need infrastructure.akr71 wrote:... I firmly believe that porridge came before either bread or beer.

I'm always amazed at how non-technical people accept evidence in support of a hypothesis (and sometimes just the hypothesis) as proof of fact. Paradoxically they tend to dismiss actual scientific theories they don't like as nothing more than speculation. I need a beer.
