That is hilarious. There isn't much space there for a brewery iirc.

I like it! I'm on a Dark Strong Belgian kick and this was on my radar - actually my first time trying it.

I found the attenuation pretty good on this, something I usually complain about with their beers.

Plenty of Belgian yeast character without going overboard. Dark fruit. A bit of tartness which I'm fond of here.

I'll be buying this again.

I think I've got the barrel aged one in the fridge. Looking forward to trying it. I had the milk stout and though that was great! :)

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I've also got the barrel-aged one sitting in the fridge. :) At 10.5%, though, I need to pick the right kind of evening for that. :)

I tried the barrel aged beer and thought it was respectable - didn't like it enough to buy a second for the cellar, but it was better than some of the barrel aged beers Garrison has put out. The house beer at Gus' was good when I had it a few months back. So while I still think it took too long to get to this point (I expect good beer out of the gate), I will say I think they've picked up their game considerably IMHO.

Dartmouth event in the works for Craft Beer Week

Image

Yes, George Christakos did recently visit Nectar Restaurant and Wine Bar to check out the dimensions of the space.

But no, despite the rumours, he’s not moving his Brooklyn Warehouse restaurant across the bridge or even opening a new burger place in downtown Dartmouth.

Christakos and chef Mark Gray are collaborating with North Brewing owner Peter Burbridge to put on an event for Halifax Craft Beer Week, being held next month for the first time.

Burbridge lives in Dartmouth, and Christakos just bought a property there.

“We were saying that there’s nothing happening in Dartmouth for Craft Beer Week, and he wanted to get something in that community so he reached out to us to do a beer pairing,” Christakos said Thursday.

“We were trying to think of where to make it happen so we called Nectar and talked to them about using their dining room and their staff, but the deal didn’t go the way we wanted it to. So we moved the conversation to Zane (Kelsall, at Two if by Sea), who was pretty happy to pick it up.

“We’re looking to do a craft beer event in Dartmouth because no one else is giving anything to that part of the city for this Craft Beer Week, which is kind of a sin.”

Christakos and Burbridge are still working out the details of their six-course meal, including the price, but expect to be able to seat 50 diners/beer lovers.

They’re also consulting with chef Renee Lavallee, whose restaurant the Canteen is upstairs from Two if by Sea, to make sure they don’t “step on her toes.”

“(Kelsall is) really excited about it and gave us the go-ahead to use the space. That’s why it’s hard for me to say it’s 100 per cent going down, but we do have to get it sorted because it’s kind of around the corner,” said Christakos, who feels Brooklyn Warehouse and North Brewing are, if you’ll pardon the pun, a natural pairing.

“We were the first place to take North beer on tap. When I heard that he was getting going I told him we would really like to have his product at Brooklyn, so we were his first licensee account and it’s been a good relationship since then.”

Menu:

Gus’ Pub 65m Blonde served with Dragon’s Breath stuffed olives, arugula, balsamic and anchovy oil

Belgian Pale Ale served with smoked scallop, celery root, maple beer, toasted grains

Summer Saison served with Welsh rarebit, cremini mushrooms, pulled rabbit, fine herbs, porter and cheese sauce

Belgian IPA served with snow crab risotto, caramelized leeks, preserved lemon, bottarga

Farmhouse Ale served with grilled rib-eye, golden beer puree, scallions, fennel

Glenora barrel-aged strong Belgian dark served with dark chocolate stout cake, dulce de leche, feuilletage

So I've never been to Nectar or Brooklyn - how was/is the food at these 2 places?

Good news. I'll be checking it out for sure.

I've been to Nectar but not for a couple of years, it was pretty good then. I've never been to Brooklyn but have heard good things.

IMHO, Brooklyn Warehouse is one of the best and most important restaurants in the city. When a young chap named Graeme Ruppel applied to be our chef at Stillwell I saw Brooklyn Warehouse on his resume ("head chef for three years") and it was an immediate done deal. Their current chef is great, too. I'm excited about this recent news.
