Sparge Water

Post by SMbrew36 » Fri Nov 25, 2016 8:39 am

How do you figure out the exact amount of sparge water needed ??

I'm now making the switch to all grain and will be batch sparing .

My first all grain mash will be 17 lb grain @ 1.25 L /LB = 21.25 L mashed at 153°f and I want to know how much sparge water at 170°c I should use to sparge. This will be a pilsner.

Assuming you want a 20L batch, just sparge with 10L of water. Once you collected 25 L of wort stop collecting and start boiling. Try this, take notes and adjust for the next time.

I may have answered without enough info... how big is your desired batch size?

Mash Water Loss = Grain Bill (17L) Divided by 2 = 8.5L

Total water needed = Final Vol(42L) + Estimated Boil off(10L) + Mash Water Loss (8.5L) = 60.5L

Mash water needed = Grain Build x Water/Mash Ratio(1.25 to 2.5) = 17L x 1.25 = 21.25L So let's say 21L

Sparge water needed = Total water needed (60.5) - Mash Water (21l) = 39.5L

*If you add a yeast starter, you have to subtract it from the Total Water Needed.
