Dumb question

Post by Thirsty » Fri Jun 16, 2017 11:18 pm

I have what I feel is a dumb question but when I buy a 5 or 10 gallon AG kit locally (everwood) is it imperial or us gallons?

I realized recently that my fermenter and kettle use different gallons which explain some of my confusion but I'm trike to figure out why me efficiency is so poor (60-67%) and I'm now wondering if I'm simply doing the math wrong.

Good question. Promash says 10 US gallons is 37.85 gallons. 10 Imperial gallons is 45.46 litres. Canada is metric, so he should sell anything liquid in litres so there is no confusion.

American gallons are 1/5 smaller than imperial...128 oz. for a US gallon vs 160 oz. for Imperial...Dave gets, as many others do a lot of US product and that's the reality...most Americans detest the metric system and it ain't changin' anytime soon. There are plenty of online calculators to ease the pain. I'm lucky that I can work fluently in all...funny thing as I measure liquids generally in liters but brew in Fahrenheit.

I would ask this to Dave directly to know for sure but my assumption is 5 us gallons which is one corny keg worth of beer ie 19 litres. It's the standard size for beer kits. You will see some kits advertised as 6 gallon or as 6.5 gallon. Those are 23L kits despite saying different things on different stores. Converting into litres gets you around the silliness with imperial measures.

Also keep an eye out for American pints those bastards will serve you 16oz when you are expecting 20oz.

Called a couple bars out on that...trying to shortchange using different glasses. Not legal for sure and they made good on it...I remember the old days where ounces were stamped on NS, NB and Quebec glasses that were filled with piss like Olands Red, Molson or 50... ugghhhh!
PS - yes, an imperial pint is 20 oz. whereas a US one is 16 oz.
