Propeller One-Hit Wonder series
I presume the news has already made it to most of you, but Propeller's next growler only release (follow-up to the Zwickel beer) is a Double IPA. 7.1% 99.3 IBUs, available February 1st.

Was the first one a wonder? Or just a one-hit?

Hey, for 99.3 IBUs I can let them in on a technicality. At least until I taste it.NASH wrote:Geez Bobby, maybe you could let them know @ 7.1% abv it's not a double IPA at all.BobbyOK wrote:I presume the news has already made it to most of you, but Propeller's next growler only release (follow-up to the Zwickel beer) is a Double IPA. 7.1% 99.3 IBUs, available February 1st.

Re: Propeller One-Hit Wonder series
Is there a release on this? Curious about the hops they are using.
Edit: Found it.

The next One Hit Wonder Limited Release Propeller DIPA (Double India Pale Ale) will be available February 1st at the Propeller Shop in Growlers only. This full bodied Double IPA is brewed with ridiculous amounts of premium Pacific Northwest Warrior and Cascade hops and is paired with a rich blend of 2-row Pale and Crystal malts. The result is an unapologetic and exhilarating hop explosion that will bully your senses. At 7.1% alcohol by volume and 99 BUs, Propeller DIPA is not for everyone… It is a TRUE hop bomb, for TRUE hop freaks!

Anyone try this one yet? I just tasted some and wonder if they poured me the wrong beer in my growler. What I have seems like their IPA, not much hop aroma for a DIPA. I wouldn't call what I've tasted a hop bomb. I must have their IPA instead.

Re: Propeller One-Hit Wonder series
John, your 100%, it just tastes like a slightly bigger version of the IPA. They must have switched up the taps or something cause chalmers and I are trying to find aroma as well the 99 IBUs there hiding in there? I like it as an IPA but not what I look for in an IIPA
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: Propeller One-Hit Wonder series
Good to know I'm not the only one. My first thought was "this needs more hops". Bitterness is fine, and the malts are good, making it nicely drinkable for the 100 IBUs, but the dead aroma kills it as a Double IPA. Needs more finish hops and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't dry-hopped at all.

Haven't tried it yet, but on the subject of notching up existing local IPAs, Jeff mentioned that Lorne had suggested that he would soon be producing a true hop bomb for Rogue's. Any word on that?

Re: Propeller One-Hit Wonder series
Well that's disappointing then. Their website clearly states that it's a hop bomb. I'm getting lots of bready maltiness and toffee/caramel notes in the aroma, but only bittering and some flavour hop presence. Very low hop aroma. For me, malt should be taking a backseat to hops in a DIPA.

Bruce,
Jeff didnt say Lorne would be making a hop bomb, he said he was going to brew a bigger ipa with twice as many hops as the current one! LOL.
Sent from the hop-phone.

Yeah it's still a tasty brew, I liked it.

"It’s not for everyone," Allen said. "It’s not a wimpy beer by any stretch."
This full-bodied beer is brewed with Pacific Northwest Warrior and Cascade hops paired with a rich blend of two-row Pale and Crystal malts.
"In order to make it not simply a big brother of our regular IPA, which is now our best-selling bottled beer, we have changed the hops and we changed the malts up," Allen said. "It’s very intense, very floral."

Quite bitter and tasty, but I agree on the lack of aroma (something you definitely want in a DIPA). Not getting the feeling there was a ton of late additions in this one at all. That being said, I enjoyed it I just wouldn't call it a DIPA and not really a "hop bomb"
