Having one now. It is as bad as you think it might be. They could have gone with Keith's Malt Liquor and been more accurate for the style.

lmfao. On tap or in bottle? Did they put the peat malt to it?

500 ml cans and 6 packs of bottles. I'd say no on peaked malt - they just let the fusels take care of the "smoky" character by not watering down the regular Keith's before blending it with a tiny bit of the dark. At least that's what it tasted like to me.mr x wrote:lmfao. On tap or in bottle? Did they put the peat malt to it?

Re: Keith's Tartan Ale
Had one last night. Not very good (surprise). Low carbonation (maybe to style, I don't know, but doesn't help this beer). Overly sweet, and otherwise more or less tasteless, with slight residual smokiness (but more phenolic than peaty).
Why doesn't Keith's just make a small batch of yummy beer to gain some cred? Their brewers are obviously trained and capable of making something delicious. I am mystified.

Trained yes but there is no evidence to support the second half of this statementjason.loxton wrote:Their brewers are obviously trained and capable of making something delicious.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I don't know - making the odd (hmmm - make that "occasional") delicious beer shouldn't be beyond them. Though I do say so myself, my very first all-grain turned out pretty well: and I hope they're better trained than I am. So I really think I have to agree with Jason. They should be "capable" ... but corporate policy says it's not allowed.

Well, I had a few sips. Not great, but I don't think as bad as the Harvest Ale. There's something in there, but the beer is so polished and thin, any flavour disappears instantly. Poured the rest into the roast. Might make OK gravy.
