Lemonade Beer Mystery
Last year I was in Iowa for business and had something the waitress described as lemonade Beer. It was great. Only about 3.5% but so delicious. It was hazy like you would expect from a wheat beer. I've tried to recreate this by making a hazy day hefeweizen and adding lemon zest. My attempt turned out to be a great beer but nothing like what I had in Iowa. Anyone have any idea what it might have been?

This maybe?
http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/olde-main- ... ale/63830/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
there web page had a different lemon beer listed though http://www.oldemainbrewing.com/brews.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shandy" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Iowa has it's own version.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Mill St Lemon Tea Beer? The description doesn't sound the same though...

Re: Lemonade Beer Mystery
Yeah it might be the Olde Main, especially because it is made in Iowa.
The comments on that site were pretty critical but I really thought it made a great summer thirst quencher.
I've had the Mill St. before and it's just not for me. Tastes artificial to me.
Thanks for the intel Liverdance. Maybe now I can find a way to clone it for summer.

Re: Lemonade Beer Mystery
I try just about everything. The Mill St. Lemon Tea is not very good but you know what is way worse? Coors light iced tea beer. You gotta try it just to see how bad it is. Haha.

This is about the most artificial tasting drink I've ever tried...I had it one night in Moncton and had to force it into me.Barr wrote:I try just about everything. Re: Lemonade Beer Mystery
Yeah it's beers like that that makes me stay far far away from any extracts in my brewing. It's a lot more work but I like to use natural flavors.

Re: Lemonade Beer Mystery
What you had was probably a mixed drink called a Shandy. From Wikipedia:Barr wrote:Last year I was in Iowa for business and had something the waitress described as lemonade Beer. It was great. A shandy, or shandygaff, is beer mixed with citrus-flavored soda, carbonated lemonade, ginger beer, ginger ale, or cider. The proportions of the two ingredients are adjusted to taste, normally half-and-half. Nonalcoholic shandies are known as "rock shandies".
I have also had the German version known as Radler. Again from the Wikipedia Shandy page:
The Radler (cyclist) Biermischgetränk has a long history in German-speaking regions. It consists of a 50:50 or 60:40 mixture of beer and German-style lemonade (not American-style lemonade, but sparkling lemon soda (e.g., Sprite or 7 Up).
A very nice summer time drink.
