Dominus Vobiscum @ Premier

Post by akr71 » Mon Feb 28, 2011 3:30 pm

Has anyone tried these yet? They have the Double, Tripel and Lupulus listed on the website. Are they worth it (specifically is the Lupulus worth $15)?

I agree. Charlevoix's Dominus Vobiscum line is pretty awesome. I was quite happy when I found out it was available at Premier. The Blanche is also available and quite good. If you enjoy Belgians you should definitely try some out.

$15 sounds a bit high to me, but I say that about everything.

Ya, I was going to ask: how does it stack up to Houblon Chouffe?

I gotta think they are along the same lines - Belgian triple loaded with hops - although I obviously haven't tried the DV. I don't see where the price jump comes in. Both have painted bottles. Both have caps instead of cages and corks. No lager yeast/lagering or barrel aging. Unless Char. is using local (see expensive, lol) grains (maybe), and local hops (2/3 impossible as it appears they are using Simcoe, Amarillo, and Saaz), I'm not feeling that price point. But as I said earlier, I always complain.

I had the Triple recently. Pretty much loved it.
I have been thinking about maybe getting the Lupulus on my next Premier visit if it's still there... but I have other stuff to do, too, when I'm over next week: pick up stuff from chalmers, go get Sea Level stuff at B's Cellar, check out Harvest Wines, hopefully make it to Hart & Thistle, and still maybe make it to Garrison, an NSLC store... I'm gonna be busy!

Hopefully Hart & Thistle? That should be #1 on your list by a longshot.

I'll do what I can! I really enjoyed it in January, which was my first time there.

We'll only be there for Sunday evening and most of Monday (unless the weather turns crappy). Lots to cram in!

Oh, and to answer the original questions, the Double and Triple are definitely worth it. I haven't tried the Vobiscum yet but from what I hear it's worth a try. Unfortunately the bottle of Charlevoix's Vache Folle Imperial Milk Stout I got from Premier was slightly infected. I've never had a problem with any of the Dominus line, but I've heard several people have issues with the Vache Folles.

Very good! I'll see if I can make it over to Premier Saturday (brewing supplies come first, lunch at the H&T, then maybe Premier).

Lupulus is a very tasty beer, and a very different animal than Chouffe. That being said, the price IS quite steep.

I want your beer in bottles or cans. Can that be arranged?

And tasting the Lupulus tonight, I have to vote no on worth the $18. Not even close to as good as the original bottles of Chouffe Houblon for nearly twice the price. Though the latest bottles of Chouffe have been disappointing too. I'm thinking these Belgian Tripel IPAs really need to be super fresh to be as good as they can be. These just seem to have lost all their aromatics and apparent bitterness and are almost too sweet when they're not fresh.
