PEI can have one beer fest... ONE!

So, as you may have heard / seen / read / drank last year, PEI had two beer fests. One by Campbell Webster (a local jack-of-all-trades business/promo guy), and one by the Murphy / PEI Brewing Co. / Gahan group who tried their best to outdo and / or bury Campbell's fest. Fast forward half a year, and this article surfaces:
http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/News/Local ... -partner/1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Basically, the liquor commission didn't like all the work and hassle of two beer fests so close to one another. To make sure two money-making ventures never happen again so close to one another (or at all), they're taking control of beer fests on the island by saying there can only be one (in Sept or Oct, and not part of Fall Flavours), and it will be put out to tender... for anyone to bid on.
Oyvay.
Discuss.

Sounds like typical PEI government agency crap.

It is PEI, FFS like Nova Scotia in the 1950's.
I happen to know the Murphy's. It's how the games is played.
Lets face it. It's silly that 150,000 people can be a Province. Bad enough that we are at a million or so.
They are a proud like place. But a bit of a joke in the day of airplanes and paved roads. A decent county.

It is how the game is played, in many cases. You're right. It's business.
We haven't hit 150,000 yet, though... maybe in a few more years! I think we're around 144k / 145k. I think we take in about... 900 immigrants / newcomers per year (maybe less... a couple years back, it was around 1,300), which helps our numbers. We're an ever-changing place! Dynamic! On the move! I can't wait 'til the monorail salesman comes... we could be the next North Haverbrook!

If eliminating competition because your business model sucks is playing the game, you can shove it up your arse, hahahahhaa.

The Murphys own everything in town. I used to work for one of the nicer ones, but he then sold his businesses to his brother. They'll soon be renaming Charlottetown to Murphytown. What worries me about this beer festival business is that the PEI LCC is nearly uninterested in offering variety to its customers. The few unconventional options they offer Islanders in beer/wine/spirits can only be described as safe. Nearly all of them are backed by major distributors and the few that aren't usually don't make it back on the shelves after their first run. Murphy's brewing venture (PEI Brewing Company, aka Gahan) produces a pretty good product but one that is equally safe. Seasonal releases are few and far between and tend to be relatively run of the mill. No one here is willing to take a chance on the local market, and so the local market continues to suck back sex-in-a-canoe beer.

There's also some archaic laws that prevent local brewers from taking chances on bigger, more exciting beers, and I have a feeling that likely extends to beer that is imported and sold by the PEILCC. I seem to recall that the law is that beer can't be over 6.5% ABV. I may be completely wrong, but I think that's the magic number.

Never heard of that one, but I know they get Faxe 10% in every now and then. Not sure about locally brewed stuff. But we definitely have archaic laws. If you buy anything from the LCC, you are legally required to drive straight home.

I think you're right, Jeff. There's a small allowance for error, but 6.5% is the strongest that can be made. I don't think there's a limit on ABV of items in the shelf. Go figure.
