The Coast - Beer Edition

Post by Seanstoppable » Thu Mar 17, 2011 1:19 pm

This week's edition of The Coast apparently has a few articles on beer. Canadian Beer News collects it all.

The collaboration question was particularly telling: Graham Kendall with a complete cop out and Sleeman brewer doesn't even leave his own company. I wonder if Kevin Keefe didn't understand the question.

Was even the Sleeman brewer going for a subtle dig at Keith's? "I appreciate when I’m drinking a style and it stays within the area it should be. Then I’m happy. If it’s completely different, then I’m not very happy."

It sounds like the Keith's guy had his lawyer and marketing manager there telling him what to say. What a tool!
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Yes, I thought that too. Probably demanded to have the questions in writing in advance.

A lot of issues in that article:

Lorne Romano:
Where else have you worked?
Probably the easiest one: a cream ale, or a seasonal like our Russian Imperial Stout. I also like brewing German Weizen---it’s a real summer beer that reminds me of brewing in Toronto. So they’re fun beers that I don’t brew all year round.

Don't you have to be "subordinate", first, before you can be "insubordinate"? Hard to imagine...

Just re-reading some of it now - Propeller's Belgian Beers? Malt Runner? And is Michael Hancock really part of the Molson family or was that a jumble of words that didn't come across correctly?

I found some of the text out of sorts for sure, and some of the answers out to lunch. Bobby Z loves Old Milwaukee? Likes lagers because you can't hide mistakes with hops? Double WTF?

Kevin O'Keefe - I don’t often drink other beers than my own.

If you were going to collaborate with another brewer, who would it be and why?
I can’t see doing that.

Randy Lawrence -What’s your favourite beer to drink (other than your own)? I like a couple cans of Guiness.

Kendall - :pow: :pow: :pow: :pow: :pow:

Yeah, I liked that one !

Let's not tell him how many hops go into a _good_ lager.

"Keefe" - we wouldn't want anybody thinking he's related to Bobby OK if he's going to talk like that. And of course he can't imagine collaborating when he doesn't know what anybody else is making. I'm sure Nash would agree that you can't make good beer without tasting a LOT of beer. It's the price we all have to pay to get better.

Keefe definitely enjoys Shipyard... He talked to me for a while about Maine brews when he saw the plates on my car. I have been to the Granite in TO, and to be honest, the brewing aspect of it seems like a bit of an afterthought over there. The Granite in Halifax produces much better beers in my opinion. (Although I haven't been to Granite in TO in a few years)

LOL...Old Milwaukee, wow, my 90 year old grandma drinks that.

Too bad literacy is not a requirement to be an editor at The Coast.

Related note - anyone else see the Propeller ad in the paper version? "Nova Scotia's Most Honest Craft Brewery"? Potshot at Keith's claims on the term outside of the region and unintentional (or not) shot at every other brewer in the province - even the guy they collaborated with?

Interesting. If I get a chance, I'll have my communications people contact their communications people about what that means, lol.
