cask festival

Post by Marc-NS » Tue Oct 15, 2013 9:41 am

As reported in the Atlantic Canada beer blog on Friday, there is a cask beer festival being organized at the Stubborn Goat on November 17. Does anyone have any additional information on this? I would certainly be interested in attending.

Yeah... I have a hard time blindly paying $5/7oz sample without at least having a rough idea of what the beers will be.

Agree. At least list the breweries and what will be in the casks.

If anyone is interested in how to make cask conditioned ale (real ale) or how it should be made, it’s a small subject because it’s about putting beer in a container and getting it out again (the brewing is the same as normal). The simplicity of cask ale is almost beyond belief, and it’s been done that way for hundreds of years. This short, easy to read and excellent paperback is $11.51. : http://www.amazon.ca/Cellarmanship-Patr ... larmanship" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So, Greg, did you find that any of the Canadian cask beers could have passed for a UK beer, or were the UK ones distinct?

Question of the day right there! Overall the more traditional UK casks were unique by comparison, they generally had unique malt and yeast character. A lot of them were far from traditional though - Quite a few big American-style hop-bombs!

Proper Job was decent as were many others. Courage RIS was wicked good, definitely a standout. I only got to try a fraction of them though, there was something like 250 different casks, and samples were 5 oz. each...

Just noticed that this is now seven casks instead of eight.

Still, some tasty looking brews.

Not bad, 8 7oz samples from each cask. Anyone going for their 56 beers? :lol:

We've confirmed for this....two pins of cereal killer, but we're going to dry hop them and fortify them with Glenora whisky! It will be well worth the $40, as there will be plenty to sample, and the Goat is awesome.

I looked at the list of Cask Ales served at Cask Days http://caskdays.com/oncask" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , and what really struck me was how inaccurate a picture the casks from the UK painted of the beer in the UK. They are almost all radical brews, super hoppy, IPA,s etc. I still hold to the belief that thee beers do not benefit much (or at all) from cask conditioning. There were only about 4 or 5 on the UK list that were of interest to me. I am serious - I do not care much about UK beers made with tons of west coast US hops. We have plenty of those ourselves.

Personally, I think this kind of event should be serving the standard beers from the respective breweries, served cask style for comparison.
