Good Evening Brewnosers,
We are 6 university students from Nova Scotia looking to learn about the art of craft beer from all different types of brewers. Our group is doing a project on the culture of craft beer and have a lot of questions. We are not entirely sure how to use this site but hopefully we will learn how to navigate around quickly. If you're interested in sharing your devotion for the craft with us please send a message we have many unanswered questions.

You guys should attend one of the meetings. You will certainly get in tune with the "culture".

Thank you for your replies!
What meetings are you referring to? Are there any in the near future/are there any in the Cape Breton area?
Would you agree that there is a subculture among those involved in local brewing? If so, does this subculture include those who distill?
Is there much association between those who brew from their homes and those involved larger scale breweries?
What exactly is involved with brewing beer? Are the majority of the ingredients used locally sourced or is it more cost effective to outsource?
What impact, if any, do local breweries have on the Atlantic Canadian economy?
Would you say that the brewing industry is beneficial to tourism, that the brewing industry is dependent on tourism or that the two are mutually beneficial to each other?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: Craft Beer School Projects
What meetings are you referring to? Brewnosers monthly mtg. Second Thursday of the month (I think) (usually in Hfx).
Are there any in the near future/are there any in the Cape Breton area? Not that I know of but there may be.
Would you agree that there is a subculture among those involved in local brewing? Somewhat (age, preferences, local etc.)
If so, does this subculture include those who distill? I don't know.
Is there much association between those who brew from their homes and those involved larger scale breweries? Some. Greg Nash, for one has been involved. I like to contact the folks at the Micros and I do get feed back.
What exactly is involved with brewing beer? TOO MANY WORDS. You can approach that in many ways.
Are the majority of the ingredients used locally sourced or is it more cost effective to outsource? Not much local product but the shops are all homegrown.
What impact, if any, do local breweries have on the Atlantic Canadian economy? If you are talking "Craft" probably an increasing amount. NSLC could give you numbers.
Would you say that the brewing industry is beneficial to tourism, that the brewing industry is dependent on tourism or that the two are mutually beneficial to each other? Interesting! I don't know. I like your thinking on this.
Keep it coming.

Re: Craft Beer School Projects
Regular Brewnoser meetings happen the second Tuesday of the month in the HRM area. There are other offshoots and meeting in other areas as well. What meetings are you referring to?
Nothing I know of in the CB area. Are there any in the near future/are there any in the Cape Breton area?
Define subculture? Homebrewers are a very diverse group, but get them all in one place and it's almost magic - it brings people together.Would you agree that there is a subculture among those involved in local brewing?
Craft distillers are out there, but my knowledge of them is very limited. If so, does this subculture include those who distill?
Yes, the craft beer industry is very supportive of home brewers. Garrison, Big Spruce and now Boxing Rock all host competitions. Craft breweries are welcoming home brewers in as guest brewers. Many craft brewers started out as home brewers. Is there much association between those who brew from their homes and those involved larger scale breweries?

There are very few local ingredients, however we do have locally owned homebrew shops. Are the majority of the ingredients used locally sourced or is it more cost effective to outsource?
Check NSLC numbers. What impact, if any, do local breweries have on the Atlantic Canadian economy?
The brewing industry should be good for tourism, as word spreads of quality breweries, more people will plan visits based on local breweries. On the other hand, breweries are not dependent on tourism. They are mutually beneficial.Would you say that the brewing industry is beneficial to tourism, that the brewing industry is dependent on tourism or that the two are mutually beneficial to each other?
