New to Home Brewing, New to the Region, Hophead for life
Hello,
Thanks to everyone that makes this site possible. My name is Josh and I've recently moved to the Halifax region to start a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Dalhousie (Geriatric Medicine Research). I'm originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, but for the past 4 years I have lived in Waterloo, Ontario. My only experience with home brewing is helping out my brother-in-law with a few all grain batches over the past couple years.
I will soon be starting my home brew career from scratch, so I'll be looking to this site for hints on equipment buying, ingredients, recipes, and general brewing tips. I am planning on setting myself up and starting out with a couple of extract kits from OBK. As a hophead, I'm also hoping to start growing some of my own hops this summer.
I look forward to learning from this community, cheers to beers,
Josh

How did you find us?
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

Re: New to Home Brewing, New to the Region, Hophead for life

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Hi Josh,
Who is your supervisor? I am a post-doc at Dal and one of my projects is analyzing microbiomes of mice to associate it with frailty. Maybe there is some research overlap?

Welcome!
I go to meetings at Dal and Bedford Institute of Oceanography quite frequently on lobster related things. You guys in HRM are lucky to have Noble Grape who have almost everything to start out, pretty annoying to wait weeks and weeks to get some basic things.
