Hello from Cape Breton

Post by CBBrewer » Mon Jun 27, 2011 10:13 pm

Greetings!

I've been ghosting the E-mail list for a couple of years now and figured I'd swing by and introduce myself formally. My Name is Jim and I've been brewing for just over 3 years. I am just coming off an 8 month hiatus I've been on since my kids were born and trying to get back into the hobby/adiction. I am an extract/partial mash brewer who is hoping to take the leap to all grain this summer. Due to work I am currently living in Cape Breton where, home brew has yet to come into its own and there is a definite lack of quality ingredients and information, but, thanks to the guys at Noble grape, a lot of trips to Halifax, and a few online resources I've been able to keep my hobby going. I guess that's about all there is. Last night was my first brew session since starting back up again, just pitched the yeast in my IPA.I am also in the middle of a 3-tap kegerator build and a fermentation chamber build. Thanks for all the useful information over the last couple years, hope to see you all around. Happy Brewing!

I like to see us branching out over the province.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Jmac, I'm currently living in Sydney River, I'm from Sackville originally.

Any other Cape Breton brewers around here? It's a lonely brewing life up here on the island.

Right on....i'm originally from the cape myself (now in NB), so i know your frustrations with the lack of brewing supplies, etc. Is that small brew shop still running on kings rd. in syd river?

I just got back from my sister's wedding in the Cape. I grew up in the Bay and was spreading the word of homebrewing all weekend. I brought down 3 kegs for the party and they are all but gone! There were a few people who said they have tried it but it sounded like a lack of quality ingredients were holding them back. Good to have you aboard.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Jmac -> Yeah, he's still down there, Brewer's Direct. Mostly a wine store now, but carries a few kits in a can and the odd bag of DME if you catch him on delivery day. The only other spot around is Wine experts on Prince Street. They carry the Cooper's kit line and a few accessories. The guy that owns Wine Experts told me he used to carry grains and hops but there was no market up here and he had to scale it back.

Thanks for spreading the good word around LiverDance, the more promotion the hobby gets up here the better. I understand the issue with getting supplies, the only way to get any quality ingredients here right now is through the net or Noble grape's fantastic shipping service.

I'd like to get a small club going up here if I could find some people, besides me and a few friends from work I've convinced to try brewing (offering unlimited pours from my kegerater while they use my equipment didn't hurt) I haven't met to many brewers from the area.

Welcome. There are a lot of people living in Sackville who are from Cape Breton originally, but not so many the other way around.

Hey Vince, good to see you on here, see you at seaport?
I gave her your message, as soon as I read it to her she knew who it was and says Hi.

Yeah K, that about sums it up, there's not a huge influx of people up here. Are you from up here originally?

I 'magine I'll be at Seaport, it was a good time last year. We'll see you there.
I'm still hoping to run into the twins at some point but I doubt they'll be tagging along that day :).

No, I'm from Sackville. I knew lots of Cape Bretonners living there.
