New from Sackville, NS
Hey,
New brewer (well adder of yeast at this point) from lower sackville. Been starting out on the Festabrew at this point to get use to the process and well what to expect. As for my beers, I enjoy a variety of styles and don't stick to the same type or style. I am contemplating stepping up the difficulty, and upon completing some research I found this site. Figure I'd join and see what this place is all about.
Presently in bottle I have the following, all aged from 3-6 months. Altbier, Double Oatmeal Stout, Pale Ale, Cervesa (only a couple soldiers remain) and a few hybrids.
In the primary I have the Red and Wheat.
I have a few hundred empty grolsch and am looking for a great Porter or Honey Brown to move into the next stage of brewing. Anyone able to recommend a intermidiate kit to move me into the next phase?
Thanks,
Keith

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

I'm more of a trial by fire kinda guy. I jumped from the festabrew kits straight into all-grain. I knew that I would eventually want to brew all grain, so it didn't make sense to gather up a bunch of equipment and try extract with grains on the stove top, only to have to get new equipment all over again a few months later.
I say keep the festa-kits going while doing your research, gathering/building equipment and just jump into all-grain with both feet. Oh, and try sitting in on a brew session with someone - that's another luxury I never had...

Welcome! I also made the jump from festas->all grain, basically for all of the same reasons listed by akr71.
Towards the end I was trying to modify festa kits by dry hopping and adding hop or herb teas to the kits prior to fermentation. It kept things interesting.
You can also check out brew house kits. Because the kits require a water addition you can make mods without diluting your final product. They also have a number of mods listed on the rgspagnolls website that will get you steeping special grains into your kit.

Hello, When I started, I used to love making Festa West Coast IPA, and we'd start drinking it after 10 days, pretty well just after it was out of it's single stage ferment.
We loved that stuff

using kits like festa and brewhouse are good ways to learn the basics of sanitizing and fermenting... once you have those down you're golden
I also tried hacking kits and it made for some more variety
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

What area of Lower Sackville are you in? I'm at the Cobequid Road end.keithforbes wrote:Hey,

Re: New from Sackville, NS
welcome
I too am from lower sackville, near the tims on beaverbank and glendale
unlike most guys on the forum here I don't do all grain brewing
I started with festa and then went to extract
i am very happy with my beer and the effort/cost it takes to get me beer as well
I also have a bar I built in my basement with a tower and 4 taps
so perhaps a lower sackville get together is necessary

Re: New from Sackville, NS
I'm up for a lower sackville meet, I unfortunately only have the festa kits right now, soon moving into the more advanced areas. However the Festabrew Altbier is an amazing beer, and is one of those limited releases.
I'm looking to get into kegging, would love to see your setup. I'm renovating the basement, adding a room and have a spot I'm going to build out for brewing and also good chance for a bar.

Re: New from Sackville, NS
when I built my first keezer I used festa kits - plenty of fine beers made with festa
again i don't necessarily brew beer because i like brewing
i do it cause i like drinking beer
perhaps why I stick to extract kits
I'm a computer nerd so had a mechanic buddy help me build my bar
but learned a lot that's for sure

Re: New from Sackville, NS
I find this interesting. I made some nice extract brews before, but they were mostly all about hops and hopping. Is that the direction you have gone? or you getting good results on the malt side. Would you be prepared to share your best recipe? Apparently extract brews have won many awards. Do you use steeping grains?Downs wrote:welcome

Re: New from Sackville, NS
I am not into hops at all so have gone the other way with mostly blondes/reds and ambers
I have not steeped any grains as of yet
that is probably where i would go next
right now its all about the extract and the really good sugar
I've added different items for flavouring like fruit, vanilla and the like
but nothing really typical beer recipe
