Hello!!

Post by Newfiebrew » Thu Feb 27, 2014 6:13 pm

Hi all, my name is Jamie and I'm brand new to the forum. I live in Newfoundland and have just begun my journey into the homebrewing hobby.So far I have assembled a mashtun from a coleman cooler and have ordered a 15g brewpot with 2" thermometer and 2 piece ballvalve from OBK and watched about 200 youtube vid's on all grain. I figure It will be spring before I get all my equipment sorted out and ready for first brew:)

Next i'm going to purchase a wort chiller from nybrewsupply and get a fermenter,bottling bucket and some sanitizer...anyone use xysan it supposivly the Canadian version of starsan?

Hope to become an active member once I get straightened out!:) Anyone care to recommend a good all grain beer to start with preferably something my wife would like which would be easy drinking and not to bitter....she likes miller genuine draft :( I'm sure I can brew better than MGD right??

Thanks

Jamie.

First welcome to the Brewnosers. Where are you living?

As for brewing true lagers, better get a handle on some brewing experience before you venture into that area :lol: Special equipment like some form of temperature control is needed to make lagers with. Trust me I know. :cheers: You could probably brew a cream ale to start with, that would be a low bittered beer.

Hi Tony i'm living in kippen's on Newfoundlands west coast.But originally from St Johns.

Cream ale was in my mind also....I'll save the lager for my 2nd brew... lol.

Just noticed your In mount pearl...are the many Newfoundlanders on here?
Just curious how available are grains,hops and yeast here on the island or do you order online mostly??

Welcome aboard!

Google didn't bring anything brew-related up when I searched for Xysan, do you have a link (or different name)?

Well that's a bit far out of civilization :lol: I jest.
No, not many Nflder's on any forums, but there are quite a few of us here on this end who do brew. Chalmers was here a little while ago and we met up at a fellow brewers house http://s15.photobucket.com/user/nflder/ ... 1.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://s15.photobucket.com/user/nflder/ ... 3.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Most of us do all grain, this is mine http://s15.photobucket.com/user/nflder/ ... c.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://s15.photobucket.com/user/nflder/ ... 9.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and the temperature control I talked about

http://s15.photobucket.com/user/nflder/ ... 1.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Oxysan is a cleaner, not a sanitizer AFAIK. Star-San is what you want, it's the cats ass.

Noticed someone (maybe you?) in the pics had a brooklyn brewery shirt on and that's the offering on beerthief (NL beer club) right now...supposed to be good stuff!!!

I got a question for y'all. I've ordered a 15g brewpot from OBK was wondering what would be best for that size pot a 25' or 50' copper wort chiller and what diameter 3/8 or 1/2 " pipe?

I'd go 50' 1/2" if you were going for best. Otherwise, I'd go with 50' 3/8"

The biggest thing is the volume you plan on chilling. I assume that with a 15g pot, you intend on doing 10g brews? A 25' chiller will only be submeresed in the 1st half of the wort when chilling, whereas a 50' chiller will fill twice as much space. If you only plan on doing 5g batches, a 25' chiller would be fine.

Plan in 5g batches to start and who knows maybe 10g later on so u guess 50ft is my best choice.

Sounds like you're picking up some good gear. We bought all our brew gear new, just bought our keg fridges, kegs, and other dispense stuff used. 15 gal pot is a great size - that's what we use. Have you checked out Everwood Ave Brew Shop? Dave owns it and posts on here quite a bit. He's got a lot of awesome stuff for really good prices. https://www.everwoodavebrewshop.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
