M. Robiteau:

I'm late to this thread but if you recall our discussion Saturday night you will know that I am interested. Seeds, seedlings, peppers, toads, whatever. Being able to pay in beer, grains, or yeast would be best for me.

I like to garden but am a bit of a neophyte and have not had a lot of success with peppers in recent years. I'm hoping to get started earlier this year with cold frames. The soil is a very clay-rich Lawrencetown till, which I have been supplementing with manure (cow, sheep, and pig) the last few years, but more with compost (kitchen waste/yard waste/brewing waste) now. Suggestions from anyone knowledgeable for fertilizer or other soil amendments would be appreciated.

A little peat moss never hurt either. I add a small amount of slow release fertilizer and supplement with liquid fertilizer throughout the year. I should test my soil ph this year I guess.

Do you guys have issues with rot or blight? I grew ~500sq ft of tomatoes and peppers back in Ont on raised beds. The Jesuit's used to rent out really awesome plots of land on their farm. I was told to not even try here at the top of the bay because its too wet. Having only been here for one full summer (last) I have to argee, but it sounds like you guys are doing well. How do you keep the humidity down to avoid rot and get that nice sun soaked hot pepper kick?

I think as long as your beds/garden is getting plenty of sunlight and has decent drainage, you should be ok. Blight hasn't been an issue (at least on this side of the marsh) for a few years and I've not seen it on pepper plants, mostly potatoes and tomatoes.

Two summers ago I got shitloads of cayenne peppers. Of course that was an yearly, dry spring followed by a (relatively) dry summer... kinda like the way this one is shaping up to be...

Ok, it's slow going but things are looking good now.

I've been hardening off the plants outside, here are a couple of shots.

Today I'll make a list of how many of each type survived but I should have plenty to share. I'll update the first post then.

Very nice indeed. :mmm:

You need to figure out a beer recipe with those for the Brewnosers series at the rb.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Something is eating my pepper plants. I planted transplants a few weeks ago and every time a look at them more leaves are missing. One was even dug up completely. A bunch of them are now just leafless stalks. What could be going on Mr. Hot Pepper Daddy?

Leaves could be dropping for various reasons (disease, nutrients, etc) but they're probably being eaten by slugs. The wet weather lately doesn't help with that either. Maybe you could try some beer slug traps.

If one was dug up maybe it's a cat. Get some cayanne pepper powder and either make a spray with it or shake some on the plants. Animals won't like that! I did this two years ago when my potted peppers were out in the open. Now I have a short wire fence around my garden.

The leaves look like they've been bitten off right down to the stock. The same thing is happening to my tomatoes. I'll try the pepper on pepper idea.
You'll have to have us over some time this summer so we can see your pepper farm.

Way too mild unless its non grocery store chili powder.

sounds like caterpillars, sometimes they can be camouflaged the same colour/texture of the plant they are feeding on, check the plant and soil near the stock, if in doubt give "atlantic gardens - bedford" a call and see what they're best advice is, they know their shit!!

I'm in for 2-3 of some not super hot ones (medium to high heat.. not CRAZY heat). Would like to have some I can cook with instead of just making sauces. Easier to grow versions better as well (I don't get a ton of sun). Awesome you're willing to share! I won't be around until next week but I can drop in then.

Cheers

So I think my plants are doing ok.. dry weather is making it a bit tough. I noticed a few black spots on some of them..

This something I should be concerned about?

Not sure but they look pretty good.

They could be a bit greener. How have you been fertilizing them?

Something I do is make a mixture of epsom salts and water and spray the leaves down (early morning or evening). This helps the leaves get greener, with nutrient uptake and is a mild pesticide. I do this once every couple of weeks.

More info here: http://www.epsomsaltcouncil.org/garden/ and of course google is your friend.

Mix at a rate of 1 tablespoon per gallon.
