I have been doing some liquid fertilizer diluted in water once a week or so... didn't want to over do it (actually thought maybe that was what the black spots were?). Should I do more you think? Do the plants like to be 'soaked' or do they like the soil a bit dry?

I'll pick up some epsom salts this weekend, Thanks!

Once a week or two is fine. When you water them soak the soil but don't keep it soaked between waterings as you'll get root rot and other over watering problems (pale leaves is one sign but could be something else like nutrient deficiency). If I had the time or an irrigation system I'd add nutrients every watering (maybe not at full concentration) or at least work my way up to that. If you feed them to much ferts your leaves and roots will burn so they would have to get used to frequent fertilization. Lots of sun helps too.

Mine are looking quite nice. Moved them to a larger pot (thanks Rob!) and have been watering 2x a week. Lot's of flowers, and even some small bells (?) forming. Getting excited!

Lot of flowers is good! Flower = potential pepper pod. Peppers are self (and cross) polinating.

A quick pic after pulling weeds this evening. I'm getting lots of pepper pods but they're impossible to see here since they're mostly green. I'll take some close ups tomorrow.

3 of my 4 plants have taken off pretty well. One poor guy is getting smothered by the neighbouring tomato plant.. blocking all his sun!

Few pictures I snapped last night. I have Fatalii, Cayenne, and Big Jim (in that order). Seems like the Cayenne's don't want to stay on the plant before rippening.. keep finding green ones on the ground. Will they ripen on the counter, or should I just use them (I have been putting them in cooking off/on).

Last picture is the massive tomato plants I have on the go. Lots of green Roma's.. and the Cherry ones are rippening some. Can I pick the Roma's and have them ripen inside on the counter?

Thanks Rob, really enjoying growing these!

Awesome Tim!

The first one is definitely a Fresno, not Fatalii. I either miscomunicated or brain farted on the label. Those peppers look really, really good. They make awesome poppers, sauce, pickled, whatever. Fatalii will melt your face off (are a superhot); Fresno are more like Jalapeno in terms of heat. They will reipen red.

Peppers will not ripen off the vine like tomatos will. You may have luck ripening them in a paper bag with apple bits for the required esters but I don't bother trying. I usually save them in the freezer for a green sauce down the road. Chances are you'll be harvesting a small wave of unripened peppers before the first frost. Really young unripened peppers taste very "green". You might also have luck grilling them green like that.

Haven't harvested yet, but thought I'd post a couple of pics. Best to let them ripen on the plant, correct?

7-pot

ACA, one of them split open spontaneously. I ate a couple of seeds, nice and hot! I suppose the red ones are ready.

Ring of Fire (or I could have this and ACA mixed up). These only just turned orange overnight.

Indeed. Peppers will not ripen off the plant.

Yes, what Jayme said.

Chalmers you do have the ring of fire and aji chinchi amarillo mixed up. Those 7-pot / scorpions look wicked, let them ripen... I am not sure if they will stop at yellow, orange, or red as I don't have any ripened either. Speaking of which, I'm going to go check on them.

I have some updated pics from several days ago in my set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nspeppers/ ... 448769744/

My Hungarian wax peppers are producing a lot, but this is the first one to ripen. All its precedents rotted on the plant. Even this one is starting to rot at the bottom.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I think I'll harvest the red Ring of Fires and put one on a pizza tonight.

Looking good (except for the pod rotting on the plant), Kyle, but I have to say I'm happy I left my plants in pots, looks like my yield is quite a bit more than yours.

That's kind of odd actually.. The year I grew 20 pepper plants, some were in a garden and some were in pots. The ones in pots were a fraction of the size (root bound I'd assume). I think on some of the plants in the garden I was getting 50+ peppers - they were waist high and very bushy. Maybe the soil just needs some tweaking, or maybe I was just lucky

Yeah my guess is that Chalmers' plants had more sunlight, etc, and less competition for nutrients.

It could have been all the grease floating in the air from the McDonald's near by.

Lol. Pepper McNuggets.

Here's today's harvest. I have a tonne of green pods left and it would be really nice to have one or two large ripened pepper harvests. Right now I'll have to freeze or dehydrate since there's not really enough to make a sauce with one type.
