Bread

So just bought a cheap bread maker from Walmart. Having never really made bread before, I like the idea of having the kneading done for me, then deciding to use the machine or the oven, depending on results. Couple of questions.

Any go-to beer bread recipes?
Any bread that goes well with beer tastings?

Looking forward to making a loaf or two over the break.

I use this for bread from scratch, not sure how to convert it for a bread machine but it's deadly, especially with some nice dark specialty grains from a porter or stout.

much like brewing, i think you'll learn best by experimenting - think of a kind of bread you want, give it a shot and see what happens!

winter vacation would be a great time to make a challah, but would be a fair amount of hand work (have to tie it to get the right shape loaf). if you manage to save enough and don't eat it all right away, it makes fantastic french toast. this recipe looks good (i've never tried it, as no bread machine) http://allrecipes.com/recipe/24419/brea ... hallah-ii/

Thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely run a couple of loaves shortly to get a feel for the machine, then go from there. The holidays are a great time to go through some bread!

I have a beer bread recipe from an early 1990's bread machine cookbook . I've made this recipe quite a few times. My favorite beer to use for it is an english brown ale, like Newcastle.

Ingredients for 1 pound machines (1-1/2 pound machine quantities in parentheses):
3/4 Dark beer or beer or beer (1 cup + 2 tablespoons)
2 teaspoons margarine or butter (1 tablespoon)
1-1/3 cups whole wheat flour (2-1/4 cups)
2/3 cup bread flour (1 cup)
1 tablespoon honey or molasses (2 tablespoons)
1/2 teaspoon salt (3/4 teaspoon)
1 teaspoon active dry yeast (1 teaspoon)

Just made this bread! I divided the dough into two loaves and next time I would do three instead, but otherwise no complaints. This is a solid recipe - thanks for sharing!

I've made cookies with spent grain before with various recipes but they've never turned out all that well, so this looks like my new go-to recipe for using spent grains.
