Amazon is good for nice thick, cheap pizza stones. I got my Kamado Joe heat deflector from BBQs.com.

SPAS Online over on Main St has the BGE stones for:
BSL (14") - $59.99+tax
BSM (12")- $49.99+Tax

Bit pricier, but from what I've read they're pretty robust.

Go to Kent and get 4 firebricks. A couple bucks each. Just put them on the lower grate when you want to cook indirect. Like I am right now. :)

Sent from the brew timer.

Does putting bricks in the fire box (or maybe put the charcoal right on them) reduce the amount of charcoal necessary (or extend the length of time the charcoal lasts), due to the smaller volume it has to heat? Say if I'm just doing a couple of burgers or steaks?

I just fill the firebox and let it run for a bunch of cooks. These things snuff out the fire pretty quickly so good lump lasts a pretty decent amount of time.

No.

You control how much charcoal you use with how much O2 you feed it. Fill the cooker with charcoal. Light it. Cook. Close vents to snuff charcoal out. Relight same charcoal next time you cook.

The firebricks are to cook with indirect heat. Place them above the fire, not below it. AKA no infrared heat. For roasting instead of searing. Etcetera.

Check Stokes for cheap pizza stones as well - mine was only $12.99 and has survived many pies.

Thanks gents, this'll be a busy week of checking out and buying gear.

In my never-ending effort to save a few bucks, I called Costco Moncton yesterday, and they had 2 in stock. At $599. So, either of interest to folks in town, otherwise I'm going to call tomorrow to see if they'd do a price match against a Dartmouth receipt. Still not dropping it. :)

I've been having a hard time pulling the trigger on this but am getting close. How does it compare to the one from Costco?

I don't like all that metal on the front. I think it would be less efficient for low and slow. I think the regular vision is a better deal.

It's pretty nice, just not sure its worth the premium. Comes with the heat deflector/lava stone which is nice. Seemed a bit bigger then the Costco one, also has a better top vent IMHO.

The front part looked like it seals up pretty well, I don't think it'd be a major problem for low n slow. It's just the price premium is the only downside i'd say.

It's a great size. About 19" diameter. Compared to the BGE, Primo or Kamado Joe, the price is reasonable though... About $400 cheaper.

Costco one would likely be fine too but realistically I'd have to add the cost of gas and the bridge to that.

They don't have any in stock at the Brick and it doesn't come with any accessories.

I bought the Pro series a couple months ago and cannot be happier. the port for the starter is a great tool. And the heat control is great. Just my own opinion though.

You may want a gasket replacement. We have some left overs.

:spilly:

You can probably lose the chimney. The Kamado basically works as a chimney when you light it.

Nice! Like Jeff said, chimney probably not required - hut the charcoal with a torch in a couple of places and you should be good.

Good stuff. :smoker:

I'd take Sandy up on that gasket filter ASAP. You'll want it.

Nice work,I'd say get yourself a rubber bbq mat for underneath, sometimes charcoal spits and catches things on fire...
