4th Annual Fall River BBQ Competition, September 19th, 2015

Post by LeafMan66_67 » Thu Aug 27, 2015 7:54 pm

OK people, time to show off your rib cooking skills in a fun competition for a great cause (IWK Children's Hospital).

Competition is on the 19th of September, with more details available on their Facebook page. This comp is pretty laid back, lots of fun, and for a great cause. Let's make this year the year of the Brewnoser!

So, did anyone enter, or express interest in entering? Where are all the rib cookers out there? The competition is a lot of fun, plus raises money for a great cause!

It was great to see another Brewnoser competing yesterday. Chicanuck was out in full force with ABT's and chicken drums, along with some tasty ribs!

I had a great time and will be back next year for sure, I finished in the bottom half of the judging but will make some changes in the future as this was my first BBQ comp. I did get to try over 1/2 of the ribs entered (there were 15 or 16) and Derek's were pretty awesome. They were sticky sweet, really nice smoke ring and pulled off the bone perfectly; scary thing was they were a touch overdone and he still won....congrats Derek. :smoker:

My ribs before caramelizing the sauce and me taste testing before submission.

Smoke On :grilling:

Belated congratulations, Derek!

Now to steal some more of your tricks. With the success of your boiled down stout sauce from last year, this year I tried boiling down apple juice into a caramel like consistency and using that as the basis of my sauce. Managed to put a nice sticky coating on my ribs with that... then I took a bite of yours, which had that sweet crust on it... damnit.

Guess I've got more experimentin' to do...

And howdy smoker neighbor :) You did a hell of a lot better than I did my 1st time doing this competition, where I came second last. Mine were chewy that year, yours were actually pretty decent.

You're certainly off to a better start than I was, keep at it.

Thanks Gary, I still have a couple of tricks up my sleeve, so I'll save them for next year. Nice 4th place finish as well, ahead of both Roger and Rob.
