Personally, I use almost strickly chopped up oak booze barrels. There's a huge amount of wood in one, and oak is a really great smoking wood.
That said, HH is a helluva lot closer to home and sells most kinds of wood chunks you'd ever want by the 10 lb bag:

And these fellas used to sell lots of chunks for smoking, not sure if they still do but an email would yeild results one way or the other...

Must be lots of other sources around this land of wilderness and woods, just to find someone that'll chop it up with a table saw, sans oils.

Definitely agree with using local. The bulk of my smoking wood comes from the maples in my backyard - they need a bit of trimming each year, so once trimmed, the chunks go into a bin for seasoning and get used the following year. The real bonus came when we cut down the apple free at my fathers place. That kept me going for a few years.NASH wrote:Personally, I use almost strickly chopped up oak booze barrels. I've had a bit of oak from the local barrels as well and really liked that as well, but I ran out!

When you cut yours up, do you chunk and split before letting them dry? My dad has a couple of apple trees, he said I could take a couple of branches from it. May also sneak a branch from his pear tree...

I chunk them up in 3" to 4" lengths and split anything that's more than 2" diameter.Swine wrote:When you cut yours up, do you chunk and split before letting them dry? My dad has a couple of apple trees, he said I could take a couple of branches from it. May also sneak a branch from his pear tree...

Almost all companies that sell firewood do not sell logs or chips in small batches. I finally found someone named Sam who will. Call him at 902-864-4650 if you are interested. I'm hopeful that he can source some apple wood, but he has oak and maple for sure.
