Wood chunks for Smoking
Looking for wood chunks in HRM to throw in my UDS. I've found one source in Dartmouth but selection is limited and price seems steep. Everywhere else only seems to carry chips. Anyone have a line on fruitwood or otherwise?
Cheers

Re: Wood chunks for Smoking
I would like to echo this question. So far I have only been able to locate apple and hickory chunk at home depot in Halifax. I need my go to pecan and cherry... tbh at this point I would even settle for chip in either variety.

I've had good luck finding chunks of various types of smoking wood at places like Winners, Homesense, Home Outfitters, etc.

Early in the season, Walmart and Home Hardware (Lower Sackville) also have a good selection of chunks. Personally, I generally use trimmings from my yard trees (maple) and am working through some applewood from a tree we cut down at dad's place.

Do you treat or age the wood in any way? I've read that you shouldn't use fresh/green wood.LeafMan66_67 wrote:Early in the season, Walmart and Home Hardware (Lower Sackville) also have a good selection of chunks. Yep - wood is usually 6 month old or more before I will use it for smoking. The applewood I'm using now was cut in summer of 2014.Tim Gregory wrote:Do you treat or age the wood in any way? I've grabbed some applewood and hickory from HD but 10$ for a small bag seems steep to me. I'll search the winners etc front. Sadly the only thing to cut down on my property is japanese knotweed, and while it may be tasty sautéed as a young growth I doubt it would make for tasty BBQ lol.

Re: Wood chunks for Smoking
I have some apple wood from a tree limb I had to cut down in my yard. It's been sitting as a whole trunk (4" diameter) since last winter and I recently cut it up a bit with a chain saw I had borrowed so I could get it bundled up to be put out for garbage pick up but if someone wants the wood they can come pick it up. Just PM me if interested.

I would be in for 5lb. Peach, cherry, or Apple, doesn't matter much to me.

Re: Wood chunks for Smoking
I'd be in for 5lb too, open to whatever is available.
In the email quoted above, it says a 25lb or 30lb order also gets a free 10lb box. So would the $70 and $90 actually be for 35 and 40lb of wood? If so, the smaller order is actually a better deal ($2/lb vs $2.25), but we'd have to have some consensus on the bulk of the order.

I didn't ask if the free 10lb is extra shipping.chalmers wrote:I'd be in for 5lb too, open to whatever is available.

I'd take 5lbs of peach, I've already got a bunch of apple and access to cherry.

Me 5lb
Chris 5lb
Derek 5lb
I'm not fussy about what wood. I feel local maple. birch, alder, apple etc we can likely do a group harvest or trade.
It the type of apple, cherry etc a factor?
