Shellfish allergy? finning agents

Post by patman » Fri Jul 18, 2014 12:15 am

chitosen and kersol (spelling sorry ) are made from shellfish, i read online/a few youtube videos that say all the protines and such are taken out and theres no chance of allergic reaction, wondering if this is true? and if its not what else can i use in its place? Would a wine filter filter out enuff crap to make it drinkable without useing it?

Safest option would be to contact the manufacturer, or consult their web site? They may err on the side of caution though, like the "may contain nuts" label. Shellfish allergies can be severe and life threatening, might be best to stay away, unless you have an assurance from the manufacturer. It often only takes a minute trace of an allergenic protein to trigger a response, so wouldn't mess around with filters maybe.

If you are kegging you could also look at Gelatin as an option, another alternative is you could look at Biofine Clear which is a vegan product. :cheers2:

Just drink it raw and murky. I wait for clearing to happen.

Gelatin works fine and contains no shellfish products. Biofine is an algae based product that is suppose to work well. Isinglass is made out of fish swimbladders, so it shouldn't cause any issues.

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

ill have to look into alternatives/not use it then, don't want to have to carry an epi pen with me to drink wine, or the quick liquor kit that i have going.

Ah, Wine filtering is easy. The LQ I have seen was filtered aswell. Just the paper filters from the shop and the filter housing they have at the store. You can carbon filter the LQ to remove the cheap booze taste too.

The liquor kits are awesome, filter with charcole, and there decent, strong smelling, put it in the freezer for a week, itll freeze the water leave the liquor, and you can go from 20% almost up to 40 with out a still :) and it makes it a smooth smooth liquor you can drink with out mix.
