Home brew software.

Post by Jimmy M » Mon Nov 26, 2012 8:12 pm

Just wondering if anyone is using any software for doing all the calculations when doing all-grain?
Like beer smith?

I use Promash.
Each software has it's quirks, but I have been using Promash for 7 years and find it user friendly to me.
Beer Smith is probably the same.

Something else to consider.

Beersmith now has mobile versions of it's software for Android and Apple (iPad/iPhone). Currently it's only the "lite"versions which mostly only allows for viewing your recipe, has a timer built it with hop additions already entered, as well as some measurement/conversion tools. The full version is soon to be released which will allow you to edit your recipes as well as much more. Beersmith also has a cloud service which allows you to upload recipes to the cloud and grab them from any device with beersmith on it.

Not sure if any of the other software offers anything like this, but thought it was worth mentioning anyway..

Brew Pal is an iPhone app. Works fine, has multiple symultaneous timers and stores recipes and notes.

Yeah, but I'd have to run Windows. Definitely not worth it to me.

I use excel, although if I knew there was such a thing as beersmith when I started I probably would have used it. Now I'm just too stubborn to change.

Native Ubuntu 32 and 64 bit versions were added last spring. They are in the download section of the Beersmith website.

You know we don't mention HBT here. You'll upset X. [in any case, that's obsolete - I know I can run many apps in Wine (though BeerSmith in Wine just sounds wrong!), but they often look pretty crappy, and if I'm absolutely forced to run a Windows app I put it in my VM]

Yes, thanks, I found them right after seeing your post. I may stick with BrewTarget, but I'll definitely give BS2 a try for this weekend's brewday.

So, I put BS2 on my linux machine, and it certainly has lots of bells and whistles I'm not used to (not sure I care about most of them, though), but the one thing I can't figure out is how to get it to calculate my IBUs. I add hops to the recipe (imported via BeerXML), from the hop selection (so they shouldn't be anything special), and tell it to boil for 60 minutes, and no mater what I select, they provide no bitterness. But I look at any of their sample recipes and changing the quantity of any hop changes the IBUs. Anybody got a clue what's happening?

my guess is it's some bug from importing from beerxml. i've never had the issue.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Yeah, that's my guess too, which is why I even mentioned importing the BeerXML. It's pretty awkward, since I was planning to change the hops...

if you share the file, i'll try opening it and adding hops on my computer - see if it's a windows/linux thing, or an importing thing

I have apparently fixed it. It imported with my custom Equipment, but (even though, iirc, the Equipment description is in the BeerXML) didn't save the equipment. Once I created an equivalent equipment in Beer Smith, it immediately gave me the correct IBUs
