Ha! Life with kids means you gotta brew when you can! I remember the days of crawling back to the house at 7am.

Got my Belgian Blonde finished yesterday. Brew #2 on my new system and still learning its quirks. Wyeast 1214 is a slooow starting yeast, even with a good shot of oxygen.

It sure is. The first I used it I had given up and thought it was dead.

A cold brew day has begun. Mashed in for Belgian Blonde. Hope the flurries let up. It's gonna get slippery out here.

After brewing my blonde in the cold and wind yesterday I though I got this brewing bug out of my system, but after just walking the dog and seeing how much nicer it is today I'm itching to go again...

I'll be brewing a Northern English Brown later today. I'm using Special Roast for the first time, and a decent amount of it.

I'm rebrewing my mild. I use special roast in that. It's awesome.

Cool, could you send me your recipe? I want to brew a mild too.

Thanks!

I use the beersmith calculations for the London water profile.

2kgs Maris Otter
500g Crystal 75
250g brown
250g special roast

Mash for medium body.

Boil 60 minutes
1 oz fuggles at 60
1 oz fuggles at 10

OG 1.035
FG 1.007ish
The first time I fermented with ringwood. This time I went with S-04.

Just mashed in a German Ale. Weyermann Pilsner, Carastan, Munich, Wheat and Melanoidin malt. Using US-05 since this is what I have on hand.

Well my strike water is heated up but my grains are yet to be crushed. Batteries dead in my cordless drill and my other crappy corded drills don't have the balls to get the mill going. Making an IPA.

Yesterday was a long brew day... I finally got my grains crushed but then my PID was giving me hell so I had to take the time to tune it more to avoid fluctuating temperatures since I'm recirculating my mash now. After yesterdays brew with a really tight mill gap I've opened it up a bit more for today's brew.

Today I'm brewing my Belgian Blond. Top secret. :D

What are you using for PID numbers?

Right now P = 400, I = 60, D = 40, cycle time of 2 but that's not accurate since these PIDs mess with t if P is not low. It's not too bad now. I'm still looking to improve it though and I set P to 1 when I boil so t really is 2 for a nice smooth boil... ie: with t=2 and 65% power in manual mode the element is on for 1.3 seconds, off for 0.7.

You might want to get rid of the derivative. Not many people bother with it outside of classrooms. Also, if you are boiling in manual mode, pid settings are irrelevant.

Just finished helping my wife brew a Belgian Blonde. She wants to put in her own entry, so I was just the assistant brewer on this one.

Finally a day off warm enough to open windows! This afternoon I'm making a batch of ESB, based on the Brewing Classic Styles recipe.
Bottled: ESB, Old Peculiar, Blonde Lager, Grolsch clone
On Tap: BCS Dry Stout, Festabrew Cervesa
Next: Grolsch clone 2.0, Irish ale

Nice, I made the special bitter from BCS on monday.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
