I'm attempting a clone of Stone Pale Ale. I got "The Craft of Stone Brewing Co." book for Christmas, and there are a few recipes within!
Also, today is my first experiment with leaf hops, looking forward to the results!

I did. It worked out great. Not sure if you found the source of the leak in yours yet but I initially had the same problem while leak testing. A washer on the outside of the cooler sealed the rubber gasket a little tighter and plugged the leak.mgc wrote:Did you end up going with the 70qt colman extream?

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Yeah, I have that washer. It only leeked when the ball valve was open so I think the leak was coming from that poorly threaded nipple. I'm going to try some Teflon tape next time. That or just replace it. Good to know yours works great.jeffsmith wrote:I did. It worked out great. Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Wortly and I brewed Kick In The Pils (Bohemian Pilsner) tonight. Ended up with 44L at 1.062 for 86% efficiency according to Hopville. That still needs to be double-checked in BeerSmith but either way, we're getting great results with our systems lately!
Here's an action shot of the wort transfer/aeration and Wortly proudly holding the massive 5L starter.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Brewing my pale ale for the second time. I can't believe how fast I drank the first batch.
5000.0 g Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1 90.9 %
300.0 g Caramel/Crystal Malt - 30L (30.0 SRM) Grain 2 5.5 %
100.0 g Aromatic Malt (26.0 SRM) Grain 3 1.8 %
100.0 g Barley, Flaked (1.7 SRM) Grain 4 1.8 %
28.0 g Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] - First Wort 60.0 Hop 5 28.6 IBUs
14.0 g Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] - Boil 20.0 min Hop 6 7.9 IBUs
1.11 Items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 15.0 mins) Fining 7 -
14.0 g Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] - Boil 1.0 min Hop 8 0.6 IBUs
1.0 pkg Nottingham Yeast (Lallemand #-) [23.66 m Yeast 9 -
My efficiency sucks (maxi-BIAB) therefore the large amount of 2-row. I'm using the imersion chiller right now for the first time and it's working great.

Looks good. What are you guessing for your BIAB efficiency?
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Well since I am doing full volume in a 19L pot then diluting my efficiency is terrible. I'm doing long mashes and recirculating when I open it to stir using a drink pitcher. I also did a small rinse sparge on last night's brew and got a measured efficiency into the primary of 58%. I am going to try a larger dunk sparge today. I find I can keep a larger volume up to a good boil with the pot cover mostly on and give it cycles of off all the way.mr x wrote:Looks good. What are you guessing for your BIAB efficiency?

Are you raising your sparge temperature before removing the bag?Rasp wrote:Well since I am doing full volume in a 19L pot then diluting my efficiency is terrible. Nope. I don't bother with mash out. Also, my mash temps stay pretty constant.Jimmy wrote:Are you raising your sparge temperature before removing the bag?
I've pushed my limits on mash thickness with this one. Here's more motivation to finish my basement system.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Do you have the ability to direct fire your mash? You would probably see ~5 point increase in your efficiency if you raised the temp up to ~168* before removing the grain.
I've only ever done it that way so I don't know the exact effect, but from reading online, it looks like it helps.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Yeah, Chalmers said that. I don't worry about it. If I feel it needs carbonating when I open it Friday night, I feel it might just get drank anyway.
Too bad I'm on call and couldn't stick around. I also gave him a bottle of my APA for him and Anthony to share after supper.
BTW, I gave him a couple bottles of Storm Coffee Porter for you guys to try and also a few bottles of Quidi Vidi Mummers Brew to go along with the YellowBelly Mummers Brew you already have. I liked the QV Mummers better than the YellowBelly ones. Nice and malty.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Just to warn you, I might have to drink a bottle or two of the Mummer's Brew so my bag isn't too heavy. But you gave us 4(thanks!), so don't worry, LD, you're getting some.
Also, bad news about the APA: Anthony isn't able to drink for the next two weeks, so he asked me to drink the beer. I'll probably get to it tomorrow (or Wed. if Frank and I can meet up). I'll try and get his bottle to him, or at least get him a reasonable facsimile next time I'm in town.

Wow, what a good friend
Or you could not worry about it and I'll see that he gets a bottle to replace it.

Excellent—IIPA from a couple weeks ago is dry-hopping now, seems to have turned out great. Mash this evening went better than expected; 78% efficiency. Just boiling now.mgc wrote:How's it going so far with the new AG setup?jeffsmith wrote:Getting ready to dough on on that coffee porter shortly.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Right now it's taking me close to 5 hours just because I don't have the process completely down (time savers, etc.). I'm hoping that I can knock it down to near 4 hours once the warmer weather hits. Getting a boil going in this weather is rough.
