The plan is to do an AG version of my hoppy amber (not sure really what to call it). I hope the brew gods smile upon me and I can actually get a brew day in!

I'm hoping to brew an Imperial IPA this weekend. I'm making my first attempt at washing yeast tonight and hoping to reuse some of that this weekend! Wish me luck!

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Good luck, such a great way to cut down on supply costs. Plus the 2nd and 3rd (or is it 3rd and 4th) generations of yeast really kick it up a notch. I've had some really quick fermentations with washed yeast.mckay75 wrote:I'm hoping to brew an Imperial IPA this weekend. Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Thanks guys! I gotta say I'm having a blast learning all there is about homebrewing...I remember when friend of mine told me not so long ago I would have make the shift to all grain...and thinking to myself there is no way! Mind you I'm only 1 batch in...but tasting the sample I pulled last night...I'm blown away with how it tastes already...and it still has a week of dry hopping yet to go! I decided that the extract ESB kit I bottled last night will be my last! All grain...all the time!

Wortly and I brewed a double-double today. 42L ea of APA From Dementia 5 and Everyday Normal Guy Too (another pale ale). Took us 6hrs start to finish. Not too bad.

Brewed up an oatmeal stout (which will become a coffee oatmeal stout) yesterday. I bought a 14 L Bubba Keg Cooler and did a BIAB partial mash in that. I'm going to try some 11.5 L all grain batches with this setup soon.

do you add water to the wort to get 5 gals or do you just make small batches?pet lion wrote:Brewed up an oatmeal stout (which will become a coffee oatmeal stout) yesterday. Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Half way through my first solo AG when my phone/timer/notebook/everything died. I thought I got myself back on track only to realize that I made my 20min additions at 40 and my 10min at 30 (as well as the Irish moss).
I thought the day was going by quick.
So I learned two things, 1) get a better/more reliable timer for brew day and 2) get a bigger measuring cup.
Otherwise it was a beautiful sunny brew-day on the back deck. Probably peaked around 3C mid-afternoon.

I'm sure you'll still end up with beer.mgc wrote:Half way through my first solo AG when my phone/timer/notebook/everything died. Yeah, the sample was really bitter but it went down alright. I figure it will be an neat un-planned experiment.jeffsmith wrote:I'm sure you'll still end up with beer.mgc wrote:Half way through my first solo AG when my phone/timer/notebook/everything died. Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
This oatmeal stout was still an extract batch with water to top off the fermenter after the boil/chill. I'm plugging away at an amber/red ale recipe to try and do a complete all grain 11.5 L batch in this (hopefully this coming weekend). I need to figure out a way to avoid hot wort aeration when it spills out the tap into my brew pot as I overlooked that on the first run.bluenose wrote:do you add water to the wort to get 5 gals or do you just make small batches?pet lion wrote:Brewed up an oatmeal stout (which will become a coffee oatmeal stout) yesterday. Also I was pretty excited when I read the OG was 1.069 and was calculated in Brewtarget for 1.070.

I never worry about aeration from the mlt to the bk. Although maybe I should.....?

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Typically you should try to avoid aeration at that point, generally hot side aeration shortens shelf life but you may never notice it. You'd really need to do controlled side by side tests to see any difference unless it's so bad that your brews are oxidized to hell in no time. Craft brewing systems manufactured in the 80's often dropped wort into the kettle from half way up or even higher until they discovered the possibility of hot side aeration issues, now they all fill from the bottom.pet lion wrote:mr x wrote:I never worry about aeration from the mlt to the bk.
