10 gallon secondary fermenter?

Post by MitchK » Mon Jun 20, 2016 9:35 pm

I was thinking of setting up a 10 gallon vessel or two for single vessel soleras but I'm having a hell of a time actually finding a suitable container... Any ideas?

you can occasionally find 10 or 15 gallon glass carboys (not sure of their precise volume). called demijohns. a bit fragile, they come in a plastic bin, usually used for wine making.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

I had a bit of a look for those but I haven't found them and I don't know if I want to use glass (in terms of weight, potential safety concerns, and how much of a mess it would make if a full one broke even if no one were hurt)

Honestly if someone made a 10g PET carboy that would be ideal.

Check out the plastic speidel fermenters. I've got nothing but great things to say about mine.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Are you talking plastic? They are great for "short term" use but longer use would cause oxidization I think.

I had one and it is heavy. MR.X had or has one.

I got it at Granite. NG or Everwood may have them too

You don't think they're high quality enough plastic for long term use? I mean they're meant to store LME longterm and LME is pretty prone to oxidization.

Just a fancy bucket.

Mr. X may have tried storing beer in his.
