Anyone tried the low cost grain mill at everwood?

Post by jimboh » Sat Jan 07, 2017 9:45 pm

Was looking at costs of a mill, I know some people say the simple coffee grinder type will do a good job but at $130 less discount these look tempting.

I have had one for two years now. Works great. Buy a drill and take the little arm off. You can also rig up a Home Depot bucket or a cardboard box above the hopper to make it large enough to do full batches. The mill is adjustable so you can change your gap as your setup changes. I was a batch sparger and had it set super tight. Now I use a recirculating system and have it set wider. I also narrow the gap for oat malt, rye, wheat and roasted grains. If you are buying grain in quantities and not individual recipes this type of mill is a must have.

We have the same one. We use a drill with ours as well. You might have to fiddle with the gap a bit to get a crush that works well with your Grainfather, and as Mike says the gap required for some grains might differ.

If you just buy your grain one recipe at a time, Dave will crush it for you. (Send him an email the day before and he'll have it ready for you.) But if you buy your grains in bulk, a mill like this is a must.

If you have a grainfather too then make sure you don't grind your malt too fine or your efficiency will suffer. Also don't run your drill on full open. You want it slow enough that the husks don't get destroyed but fast enough that you don't stand there all day.

Thanks for all the responses. Unfortunately I am out on the Eastern shore so Daves is a bit of a trek. Have got my last lots of crushed from NG. Just thinking would be nice to buy in bulk.
