hop spider
I've been using a hop spider lately and notice the hops in the spider are not at a rolling boil while the rest of the pot is rolling. I assume the fine mesh blocks the rolling boil. The hops just sit in the spider even when I suspend them directly above a burner element. I am concerned I am not getting a full scrub of my hops and not getting their full oil potential. Not sure if I am doing something wrong??? Maybe I should use the spider as a filter post boil (ie rack from kettle through the spider)? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: hop spider
I'd ditch the spider and let those hops roll freely in the boil.
Either a) do a whirlpool at the end of the boil to try and avoid picking up all of the hop sludge, or b) transfer everything into your fermenter.
I've done both, and have found no negative effects from transferring everything to the fermenter. The biggest issue with this process is making sure you have the room in the fermenter.

Re: hop spider
I have been trying to reduce the amount of hops transferred but I don't panic if there is an inch in the fermenter.

Re: hop spider
I use a stainless steel mesh strainer when I drain from the kettle into primary, it takes out a fair bit of the sludge and aerates it as well
