Columbus are up.
Just picked up my centennial / cascade and willamette rhizomes from Everwood today. They're going in the ground on Saturday.

My Willamette and Cascade started showing life a couple of weeks ago. This will be the 3rd summer, so I'm hoping to actually get something this year.

All mine are going mad. I put them in last year, and managed to harvest a few ounces. They're going mad this year. I actually split this guy to grab two cuttings (sterling) to make up for two that died. Has to be about 40 shoots coming up. Will have to snip soon, but I just love seeing it so happy. :)

Aside: Does any one know how to rotate photos? They're always fine on my computer, but then get rotated when I post them.

Is it too late to plant some this year? Does anyone stock them? I know Everwood's were pre-order

Not too late. I didn't get mine in the ground until the first week of June last year. I was delayed building my trellis. Still managed to harvest some hops, but more importantly, with one exception, every hop that sent up shoots the first year laid down a massive set of roots and survived the winter and is going gangbusters this year. I threw some extra rhizomes/weaker looking ones into ca. 16" diameter pots that my cedars for my hedge came in. They also overwintered and did great. I moved them this year and the hole pot was full of roots/rhizomes.

I got mine from Prairie Gem hops by mail order and kept them in the fridge until ready to plant.

What's the consensus on how many bines to let go the second year? I've read from three to six in various places. What are people doing? Some of my plants must be throwing up 40 shoots or so this year (their second).

Thanks Jason.

If I'm going to go with pots for the first year, how big should they be to allow good growth of vine and root?

My plants are very mature (5 years+), and due to just not always having enough time to continually prune some how 12 or more shoots climbing depending on how quickly they're growing. Perhaps I could end up with more of a yield if I kept them trimmed back, but I already end up with about 10x more than I can use myself.

Mine are also coming in like crazy this year.

Anyone know any best practices around splitting the rhizomes without killing them? I have a few friends who would like to grab a snipping from my plants but I'm not sure when the best time to chop em is, or what/where i should even be cutting from, haha.

I think it's pretty hard to kill them. You just dig around the crown a little, and rhizomes should be just below the surface and be a little more squishy compared the roots. They'll often have roots of their own and maybe some buds.

Hops are loving the cool weather. Some of the bines are longer than a foot now!

I picked up a couple of young plants at the end of last year from Meander River farm and put them in the ground before the frost hit. This is my first year growing.

Perle is shooting up nicely

The Centennial plant looked really rough in the planter last year, glad to see it making a comeback after being in the ground

Here's the set up this year... did I do it right?
