anyone use (real) vanilla extract?

I can't find any vanilla beans and I'm supposed to be adding fruit and dry hops (and vanilla) to my milkshake IPA in a couple days.

Thinking of potentially omitting the vanilla beans then adding a tiny (like 5ml) amount of extract at kegging since I can always pop the keg open and add more. Just curious if anyone else has used extract instead of whole beans and what amounts they found worked for them.

They sell Vanilla beans here in Calgary at Costco. I've used vanilla extra in a porter before. Just be careful it is easy to add too much.

I normally use 1 FL oz in a 5 gallon batch of blueberry cream ale, and it adds something to it, but isn't over powering

If you need beans in the future I've used this site https://www.beanilla.com/vanilla/vanilla-beans in the past. I understand there is a worldwide shortage so they can be pretty pricey.

I wound up putting 11ml of PC brand extract in the keg and it turned out alright.

I've never had any trouble finding any. They're usually in supermarkets by the bottled vanilla. If the regular ones don't have them, I'd be surprised if Pete's didn't.

I am about to add maple extract to my maple pecan brown - that is in the secondary. Is there anything that should be done to the extract prior to adding it ? I've never used extracts.
I'm only going to be adding a small amount - maybe 1 tsp to start - as I don't want it overpowering and can always add more in a week if it's still too subtle.
Just wasn't sure if I can add it right to the fermentor without doing something to it first - boil / microwave in short bursts / other.
Don't want to ruin the maple extract flavour - but also don't want to add any bugs to the brew.

It's a new bottle of maple extract that has never been opened if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Mike

Unless its a sketchy bottle that been sitting half opened forever or you've been taking sips of it, it'll be sterile to start. Nothing needs to be done. Just add away. :)
