When to harvest mystery hops

Post by Thirsty » Tue Aug 29, 2017 2:42 pm

My Aunt tells me she has lots of hops growing on her property. They have been untended for many years and I don't know what kind they are. I'm wondering if anyone could estimate when they should be harvested? It is a 2 hour drive to Liverpool for me so I can't just go check. When I go it will be to grab what I can all in one shot. I suspect the answer depends on a lot of variables such as hop type.

Thanks

I'm harvesting my first ever crop this weekend as well. Curious what everyone does with your hops post harvest. I.e making sure no critters inside, drying, storage.

I tried to dry mine to avoid any spoilage issues before putting them in the freezer. I put mine in between two window screens (sitting on two kitchen chairs - one at each end (so they're about 20 " off the ground) with a stand up fan (laid down on its side) blowing air up at them. Also had my basement dehumidifier next to them. I think I left em for about a week. And then into freezer bags and into the freezer.

Here's a good article on it:

I built an oast (basically what you do, detailed and pictures are in diy somewhere), and usually dry them for 3-4 days, then vacuum pack and freeze

Last year I used my mesh bag from the BIAB setup - you can pick your harvest right into the bag and just string it up somewhere and point a fan up through the bottom.

You've gotta kinda move them around every once and a while (I hold a big bowl under to collect/not make a mess with the lupulin that may sneak out through the mesh) since they don't lay flat or at an even level but it worked really well for the low effort. Will be doing it again the same way this weekend.

I just picked my fuggle plant

I have it sitting on a screen drying in ambient air. I'll keep it there for four days and then vacuum seal.

Meander farms is picking their hops this weekend (they need help btw)
So good indication yours are probably ready.
