No, I just seem to have latched onto them recently. Someone made one for the December exchange a couple of years ago and it was the first one I ever had. I've had a few more this year and then I decided to make one myself, loosely modeled on Sawdust City's Ol'Woody. I used a touch too much roasted barley (which Ol'Woody uses, but is not a typical alt ingredient), but it still turned out really good.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
I'm really liking them as well. This is my first attempt at making my own. The wort tasted good, so I'm optimistic. It's bubbling away in my chilly basement at 17°C. I should have brewed it a few weeks ago to allow extra time for lagering (since I'm December 1 on the Advent calendar)Buccaneer wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2017 9:06 amNo, I just seem to have latched onto them recently. Re: What's everyone brewing?
Had to brew a different beer for the xmas exchange tonight. First beer I already had kegged in the fridge froze solid in a kegerator incident. So now instead of an all-Horton Ridge bitter, it'll be a NE-style IPA, but using Big Spruce's Pin Cherry yeast that I had built up for their comp.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
Had a Vienna-ish lager freeze on me during lagering once. Ended up tasting fantastic... not sure how it would have played out had it been carbonated in the keg though.Hub Brewer wrote: ↑Thu Nov 02, 2017 9:59 pmHad to brew a different beer for the xmas exchange tonight. Re: What's everyone brewing?
I just mashed in on my December exchange beer. A bit late, but it's an English beer, so I didn't see any reason for aging time.

Yup. It was funky. Re: What's everyone brewing?
Leftover Grain Stout
5 lb United Kingdom - Maris Otter Pale
3 lb Liquid Malt Extract - Munich
1 lb American - Chocolate
0.5 lb Flaked Barley
0.5 lb American - Roasted Barley
2 lb American - Pale 2-Row
2 lb Dry Malt Extract - Light
I've just finished kegging the Leftover Grain Stout. It's a big mix of stuff culled from, you guessed it, leftover grain. Came out at 5.12%. The initial recipe called for an OG of 1.61, so I brewed up a starter which kicked off the most aggressive fermentation I've had yet. The next morning the foam had bubbled through the airlock, so I fixed up a blowoff tube into a growler half full of sterilzer, and left for work. My mistake was not putting the growler into an empty brewing bucket, cause when I came home from work, the growler was full of wort and there was about a gallon of stout wort on the laundry room floor!

Brewed up a mosaic IPA "Pretty Boy" & "Pretty Boy Brett"
10gal batch
16lb MO
4lb Vienna
2lb Honey malt
2lbs Flaked Oats
mashed at 152f
4oz pellet mosaic (10.7% aa) @ 15min
4oz of Cryo Mosaic (24.1% aa) whirlpool for 60min @ 140f
6oz (3oz per carboy)of pellet mosaic (10.7% aa) in the fermenter with the yeast (TYB Vermont ale).
on day 3 added 6oz (3oz per carboy) pellet mosaic (10.7% aa).
I may add another dry hop just before kegging...maybe 4oz (2oz per carboy) of Cryo Mosaic (24.1% aa)
I split the batch...1 carboy straight Vermont yeast, 2nd carboy is a blend of vermont and wlp644
fermenting away at 18c.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
My Horton Ridge two-row/Citra SMaSH ended up being a crowd pleaser. Bought way too much Citra due to some mathemagic while scaling, so I ended up dry-hopping with it as well. (Shoutout to Patrick at Outcast Brewing in Calgary for suggesting a hop schedule.) Didn't end up hitting my target OG, so it was a bit light, around 3.8%, but super juicy. Adjustments will need to be made, and I may consider adding a bit of Munich, but overall, not a bad first stab at creating an original recipe.
Assuming Saturday's forecast holds, I'm going to try the spruce ale recipe in the Brooklyn Brew Shop book. Should be ready in time for the leadup to the holidays. Now I just need to figure out which side of my neighbour's spruce tree is least noticeable...
