Re: What's everyone brewing?
Just brewed my second go at the boxing rock black box challenge.
Sort of a mix of a Belgian dubbel and an apa with all hops in hopstand.
Tried to do a kettle sour for the first time without the ingredients to lower the PH before pitching the handful of grains. When I vented the keg my brew room smelled so bad I had to leave.
Oddly enough I did a long aggressive boil and it seemed to dissipate, when I did a hop stand I used a pile of hops along with .75 oz of orange peel. If I can smell the cheese vomit after fermentation I'm gonna add some Brett and let it sit for 6 months.

Brewed up a pale ale with mosaic hops
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
Just opened the first couple bottles of a noble grape All Grain 'Best Coast IPA' I bought to christen the Grainfather and loved it.
Yesterday I started my second brew, this one from a beersmith recipe, an Old Speckled Hen clone. I had to make a trip out to Petes to get the special ingredient, a can of Lyles Golden Syrup.
Before I started on the All grain I had been making the Festas and a Baron Redwood ale. Reckon I will carry on knocking these out for the kegs for the 'crowd' and keep the all grains for myself and a few of my pals who appreciate a good beer!
Having said that how would an extract kit work out timewise in comparison to one of these boxed beer? I believe Everwoods kits would be similar in price to the barons and cheaper than the Festa's.

Timewise in terms of brewing or fermenting? Extract brewing is quicker than all grain, but it all needs the same time for the yeast to do it's job

Brewed 40L of red ale using 100% Red X Malt. First time using a actual mash tun and it worked great, so much easier than lifting a heavy bag and making a mess on my stove.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
Yes, as KB says...time wise fermentation would be identical regardless of all grain, extract, Festa etc. I still do all three and Everwood extracts or all grain are the best deals around. Dave would be my go to guy for most things...he's also a GF owner and I would trust him to put things together or help me with my recipes - all grain or extract. I've never bothered with Barons but have done plenty Brewhouse and Festa. I did a Microbrew from Quebec and is wasn't even in the same league as Festa.jimboh wrote:Just opened the first couple bottles of a noble grape All Grain 'Best Coast IPA' I bought to christen the Grainfather and loved it.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
Yes I realise that once its in the fermenter its all the same.
I was thinking that if extract brewing cut out the mash and sparge stages then that is a couple of hours saved plus clean up would be much easier without the grain.
The extra work is worth it for beer for our own consumption but when the crowds come round a corny keg doesn't last long, so making all grain would become a chore rather than a labour of love.
I looked at a few recipes, some included grains. Do these just go in the boil? or is a mash stage still needed for recipes with extract and grain?
I am on the Eastern shore so Dave's is a bit of a trip so I would like to buy enough for say 3 or 4 brews each trip. If I can choose a nice red and a cream style that is palatable to non beer loving Canadians, then I would stop buying the boxed kits.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
There's all extract, extract w/ steeping grains, partial mashing, and all grain.
Partial mash and all grain require a mash and lauter/sparge. It is more time consuming and involves more gear. Extract with steeping grains takes about 30-45 minutes longer than just straight extract. It's not a mash proper, but just soaking the grains in a bag for a bit before the boil. It only involves specialty malts, that are in small quantity just for a little extra flavour or colour.
