Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
My Black IPA worked out great, except for one small issue. My sister dropped by to give me some money and somehow between transferring a handful of change from my hand to my pocket a loonie went flying and landed right in my kettle of cooling wort! I dipped my arm in Starsan and went fishing and got it out within a few minutes, so hopefully it won't do too much damage.

No time today for a new one; but just transfered my imperial Porter too the secondary and added the vanilla, down to 1.036. Needs to drop some more over the next 2 weeks.Flavours are good!

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
I have an Old Ale planned for Friday using wyeast 9097 'Old Ale Blend' (a sacch/bret blend). I also plan for this brew to be my first attempt at partigyle brewing with the second runnings being an amber or pale ale.
Anticipated first runnings OG ~1.100 which I'll dillute down to 1.08x and hop to about 50IBU (Bullion & Willamette).
Anticipated second runnings OG ~1.050 and hopped to around 30IBU (with what is still up in the air, maybe Magnum or Mt Hood). I'm also thinking that the second runnings beer will be a hop burst, where all the hops are added in the last 20 minutes.

Crazy shit man. How are you calculating your first running efficiency? When I do big beers, my eff goes from 80+ down to the mid 60's. I always need to use a bit of extract to hit my OG.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Wild Ass Guess! I plugged 67% into Beer Smith and went from there for the base recipe. Then I used this article and the associated tables to guess what my first & second runnings will be based on a 50-50 split and the anticipated OG of the base recipe.mr x wrote:Crazy shit man. Then for an extra math mind fuck - my recipe has brown sugar in it, so I had to take that out of the recipe and look at the tables again based on that OG. The sugar is only there as a gravity boost for the old ale. I have some extract on hand too, in case my efficiency really goes into the shitter.

Let's hope so! If things go horribly, horribly wrong I'll just mix the 2 before I start the boil and carry on as if it were a normal brew.

Brewing up a IIPA and a HobGoblin clone today.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

How did you wind up with so many of those hops at that ibu?

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
A friend had got them in a hop order, and they had been sent to him by mistake. They have been around for a year but only opened then restored for about 4 months. he was cleaning out stuff and gave me the 4.5lb that he had left. I'm sure that I'll be sick of them by the time i use them up.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Got an empty fermenter, going to use it for a batch of Apfelwein... Anybody got any tips on where to get some good AJ for it? The only good quality stuff I've found preservative free comes in tiny 0.8L containers! Gallon size would be much, much more convenient. Anything larger than a litre, really!
Munich Dunkel... Sounds really good. What yeast are you using?

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
Using the Rasenmacher VSS strain. Just racked off a schwarzbier, and it was remarkably clean and tasty. I think the yeast will be great for a MD. Using the BCS recipe for this one, and the Narziss fermentation schedule. Seemed to ferment great with no added O2 on the schwarzbier.
Have you tried the AP. I made a bunch years ago in 1 gallon jugs using many types of OJ. Didn't care for nay of it. Maybe it was just my method.

Re: What's everyone making this weekend?
I've done batches of Apfelwein in the past, but it is a real pain in the arse to buy 25+ damn bottles of juice for a batch. Haha. Never tried with OJ or anything like that, just upped the OG a little bit before fermenting out dry with champagne yeast, then either bottle still or prime for a nice smooth draught cider.
