Re: What's everyone brewing?
Going to brew a hoppy tripel with Cashmere today. Also might try to revive this yeast on the ole stir plate, just for sake of science.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
My in-laws really like the cream ale I make. So brewing a cream ale for them. Might do a 2nd brew today, same cream ale, so I can stock them up for the new year. This is the 1 situation I wish I kept my propane 10gal setup. But brewing inside with Robobrew is nice!!

Re: What's everyone brewing?
After spending most of 2019 fiddling with lagers, I'm closing out the year with a simple guzzler ale - 2-row, flaked wheat, crystal 30, willamette, wlp001.

Re: What's everyone brewing?
Put in my first brew on the new kettle yesterday. IPA with a bit of an old school feel, with Falconer’s Flight 7C’s, Simcoe and Willamette for the hops. Loving the tangential whirlpool port and the full tear down that TC connections allow.

Nice setup Aaron. How did that mash tun do holding temp outside?

Re: What's everyone brewing?
I’ve had the tun for three and a half years now so I’m pretty comfortable with it’s capabilities. I bought it when OBK was blowing them out at 50% off because it was one of the original 10 gallon models with only gallon markings and no upper bulkhead (obviously I bought and installed one).BBrianBoogie wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2019 5:57 pmNice setup Aaron. How did that mash tun do holding temp outside?
On a day like yesterday when it’s above zero and the wind isn’t ridiculous, I probably don’t lose more than 1°C over the course of 60 minutes so I don’t take any steps at all to minimize heat loss. I’ve got the MtSs heating element and controller (pretty clearly an STC-1000 with a custom firmware) and that does work, but usually just enough to mitigate temp loss on a cold day. If it’s really cold out I’ll weight the lid, possibly use the MtSs, and maybe even bring the tun inside during the mash (although yes, it’s god damn heavy), or I’ll just wait for a warmer day
I should admit that when it comes to mash temp I’m a pretty slack-ass brewer. If I’m within 1.0 - 1.5°C high or low i don’t even bother trying to correct. And for the styles I brew that’s normally fine. I love the Ss tun because it’s very easy to keep clean, it’s got the thermowell so I know what my temp is, and it holds heat reasonably well for my outdoor brewing.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
