Brewing Pumps

I was looking on ebay for good deals on wort pumps and came across a magnetic drive pump for about half the price of a March or Chugger pump, they come from Australia (and probably China before that). https://keg-king.com.au/mkii-magnetic-d ... p-65w.html

Has anyone used these before?

Probably close to the same price as a Chugger shipped and landed.

Don't forget they appear to be 220V pumps. Providing you have a 220V outlet near your brewing you are set.

Also may be worth noting that these appear to have BSP threads vs NPT

these are just on the maker's website. There are others available in North America with NPT and 110V.

I bought the 25w 1/2” version from Williams brewing. Their website says it is outfitted with bsp threads but npt work, and it did.

OBK Chugger pumps are less than $200.

Anyone have any experience with the $100 pump at Noble Grape? It's marked down from $140. Seems like a great deal if it works.

Might want to consider if the temperature range of that pump suits your needs. If it’s the one I’m thinking of it isn’t rated for boiling temperatures.

It's rated to 90 celcius. I never need to transfer anything even close to that temp. I took a chance and ordered one for my 3 keggle build I'm working on.

The nice thing about pumps that can pump boiling liquid is they are self sterilizing, you can run them during the last 15-10 minutes of your boil

Yeah good point. That would be a nice step to save. Although I wonder if you could achieve the same result by running the wort through at pasteurization temps.

You could potentially. You would have to recirculate for a while to ensure all parts of the pump and your lines were at that temperature. If you look up some pasteurization charts that plot temp against time you’ll find that a few mins at the high end temperature rating for that pump is sufficient to kill any microbes living in your wort.

I should add I would not want to continuously run a pump at its highest end of temp rating.

It’s hard to argue with the microbe science but I still prefer to recirculate near boiling wort/water through my pumps and I like the dummy protection it has built in from accidentally switching a pump on while it’s boiling or near boiling.

By the sound of it you are only using the pump for lautering. HLT to MLT - MLT- Bk? If so then you can work around needing a high temp rating.
