Hop Shoots 2018

Post by RossBee » Mon May 07, 2018 11:37 pm

Noticed today that some of my Cascade shoots are poking through the mulch.

Time to transplant.
Why brew beer I can buy?

Mine are up too! This is their 3rd year and I got a decent yield last year. Wondering if it's time to divide them? Anyone have any experience with that?

Mine were started last year in pots. Kicked them outside a week or so ago and they are about12" already.

Wicked! I didn't get a single cone the first year although they grew to about 8 feet. Last summer they were way up and over my 10-12 foot trellis and heavy with hops.

How many bines do you let grow?
- Whatever comes out of the ground?
- Pick 4 best bines and trim he rest back?

Just curious because I think I let like 6 or 8 grow last year and they didn’t grow that tall and didn’t get as much of a yield as the previous year.

I think I’m going to cut all back; except for 4 best growing bines so that the plant isn’t trying to divide up all he energy / nutrients to 8 shoots. Maybe give me better yield? Thoughts?

There's a school of thought that you should trim back the "bull shoots". These are usually the first 3-5 shoots per plant out of the ground. A lot of hopyards do this to increase yield. There's plenty of reading material on it on them internets.
Give a man a beer, and he'll waste an hour. Teach a man to brew, and he'll waste a lifetime.

I trimmed most of mine back to 1 bine. I let a couple go with 2. Read it somewhere. I might let a plant or 2 have 3 this year and compare the production.

Mine went from new rhizomes to about 12' tall last year in pots. I only got about 2 handfuls of hops in the fall. I have high hopes for this year. 1 pot has one main shoot and the other has 8 or more so I will need to decide what and how many to trim soon.

Anecdotal evidence for what Ruby said. Early on when they were about 3' tall one was totally broken off somehow. That one ended up just as tall and produced the most cones.

Mine are all up. Last year I let them grow a couple feet and cut them all back to the ground. I read somewhere you don't want them to reach the top of your trellis before the summer solstice. Second picture is harvest last year when I took the trellis down.

Cut em all back to ground level!?!?

Sounds so wrong. But your pictures don’t lie. That’s a hell of a crop.

So .... by the end of May when they’re up 1 - 2 ft - you cut all shoots back to the soil?

I'll be cutting mine back this week. They're already a couple feet high now.

This worked for me last year in year 3. Took my plants to the perfect height and flowers were everywhere. Your garden might preform differently.

I’m not sure mine are hardy enough to bounce back from trimming them all to the ground.
But I think I’ll trim all but 2 and see how it does this year. If yield / growth is poor - maybe I’ll give that a go next year.

Was just trimming the bottom 1 ft of leaves off the bines this morning. Says on the internets that helps avoid moisture / disease ..... anyways, noticed that my Columbus has some side shoots off the primary bine ..... trim those too? Or leave em?

Just wondering what other people do.

I trim those so that the plant puts as much of its energy into the producing bines as is available. I noticed this year that I have new rhizomes developed that I think will need to be divided. They are incredible plants. At certain times of the year you can literally watch them grow.

Sounds good to me. I’ll trim the rest of em up tomorrow.

Cheers

These horizontal offshoots are new this year. This is year 3 for these plants. Anyone know if I should trim them? Can’t reach them all.

Don't trim the side arms! That is where all your cones will come from!
