Good Afternoon fellow Brewnosers,

Recently at a party, my roommates sisters boyfriend gave me a taste of his homebrew, and I was really taken aback by the quality of it, it was very wheaty with some hints of berries. I have done some googling into what it takes to start off your own homebrew, but I have been unable to find somewhere to purchase the necessary equipment, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Noble Grape is a good place to start.

Noble Grape (several locations around HRM) is a good place to start - they can get you all the basic equipment, and a kit of some sort (FestaBrew or their partial grain kits are probably the way to start off - pure extract kits never taste very good in my experience). Their kits come with instructions on how to do it, and their staff are usually quite helpful as long as they aren't too busy. If you're outside HRM, you can usually pick up the equipment at either smaller wine kit stores, or if you're in Cape Breton, the Co-op always seems to have carboys and buckets. I'd still recommend getting your first kits from noble grape or online though, as the wine kit places usually only have extract.

I would spend some more time reading online and once you have a handle on what equipment you need there are always kits on Kijiji that may help in saving a buck or two. Else, I agree with the above posters, Noble Grape (abbreviated NG here all the time) is the place to go.

Here is a good site to get you started, don't get overwhelmed, just stick to the first 2 sections for now.

This forum is also an excellent resource. Be careful though, brewing is a powerful addiction, I would wager greater than beer itself!

I think the others have it covered. If you want to recreate the recipe your friend used he may be able to provide it and some folks on the forum or the staff at NG may be able to convert it to an extract recipe if you don't want to immediately make the investment needed for all grain brewing.

Ask lots of questions, there is a lot of Brewing knowledge on this site.

Just recently I purcahase everything needed for brewing beer and wine off of kijiji for a fraction of the price that you would spend at noble grape.

Yes, just tell them at checkout that you're a member of the BrewNosers. I forget the discount amount, but I think it's 10 or 15%. After telling them once, it will be in the system and automatically discounted in the future. If you shop at more than 1 NG location you will have to inform each store, their systems are not connected.
