Hops in the Mash?

Post by erslar00 » Fri Dec 23, 2011 5:22 pm

Has anyone ever added hops to a mash? Did it make any difference? Is there any point in trying this? I guess there are more efficient ways to boost hop flavor than this.. Just curious. thx

Yes, I recently made a Pliney the elder clone that called for hops in the mash and from a process point of view, it was no trouble. I think the theory is that it adds a slightly different bitterness profile to the finished product than using hops during the boil, and dry hops stages. Since this particular beer had many hop additions at all stages it would be very hard to say which of contributed what to the final taste. It did, however, have a wonderfully complex bitterness profile and I would not hesitate to use a hop mash addition again.

I lot of the beers I do are mash-hopped. When I want a beer that screams hops from every angle, I mash-hop X)
