Infection from fermcap?

Post by jason.loxton » Sat Dec 22, 2018 4:55 pm

Back into brewing after a long absence. 3 of 6 batches so far have had a persistant, tasteless gusher type infection that showed up immed post main fermentation in carboy. My sanitation is good and cant figure out commonality. One possible connection is ferm cap. I used it in those three batches post kettle. Its an old bottle (4+ years). Simple enough to replace (and I will) but just wondering if anyone has ever heard of ferm cap as being a source of infection? Seems unlikely... but i ve eliminated most other possibilities.

I read that fermcap has a life span of only 6 months. Not sure after that. I replace mine every 6 months. What about your old plastic equipment that has sat for a long absence? Many things can infect beer unfortunately.

I only boil with FC. I would not trust an open bottle after the initial use (from factory) and then I don't trust it.

Larger fermenter may be in order to allow for for fermentation.
