Anyone use the stir plate they sell at Noble Grape?

Post by GCR » Fri Dec 28, 2018 3:03 pm

https://www.noblegrape.ca/products/magnetic-stir-plate

I got a bunch of gift certificates from my LHBS (E&L in Moncton) for xmas, and they use the same wholesaler as Noble Grape. Was going to order something cheaper on Amazon, or build something myself, but I am pretty lazy right about now.

Anyone use this rig/is it any good?

Yes. Had mine 10 years. Buy a bigger stir bar. I can use my 5 litre flask with it too. Buy some of those silicone stick on bumper pads to keep a 5 litre flask from slipping.

Sweet. Thanks man! I figure a 2 l flask oughta do so I just do max 6 gal batches. Would a 2 l clear growler also work do you think or would the magnet be strong enough? I've got an erlenmeyer or back order.

Itll work but the flask has a nice flat bottom and it's easier to keep the stir bar moving. Less frustration

I would recommend a 5l starter vessel if is affordable at the time. This is dependent on what type of beers you brew. There are many high gravity ales and even lower gravity lagers that will require to do two steps with a 2L starter even with yeast at 100% viability ( not happening). 5 liter allows you to do these brews but also overbuild your starters to bank some fresher yeast for next time if you’d like.

It’s also nice to have the 5l to prevent or at least further control boil overs and not have to completely fill your 2l flask of course you can always use fermcap and I always do.
