SCOBY culture for kombucha

Post by Halifax_Jeff » Sat Feb 09, 2019 8:48 am

After a little run of some stomach issues I want to try to make some kombucha.

Anyone have SCOBY for trade/sale/offer?

I regularly dump loads of them as I have way too many, you're definitely welcome to some!

I found the GT's kombucha to be a great starter. Dump 1 bottle in for a 2 gallon batch, and you'll be good to go.

Can it then be propogated further? As in buy it once and then keep building it for future batches? Completely new to this

Yes, you'd just use the GT's kombucha as the starter for your first batch - once that batch is finished fermenting you'll have a SCOBY. You'd then use the SCOBY along with some of the fermented kombucha for your next batch. I always used a ratio of about 10% starter in a new batch (ex. 5 liter batch would get 500ml of starter, for a total volume of 5.5 liters. Continue to re-use 500ml from each batch as a starter for the next batch).

Awesome. Thanks for the help Jimmy. I'll post up some pictures in the coming weeks!

I used two old white labs kombucha scobies (scobys?), made delicious kombucha. Not worth what they charge for them but I think if you were brewing commercially and wanted to start from pure cultures of something it makes sense.

Can I make this stuff in a 1 gallon jug similar to a growler? Everything I see says wide mouth, but is that just to ensure you can get the scoby out at some point? If so, I think I could deal with that when the time comes.

Yes you should be able to use a growler, but you likely won't get the scoby out. They get pretty thick and tough, and will probably get stuck in there.

I bought a 1 gallon and a 2 gallon glass jar at WalMart when I started brewing Kombucha. They were pretty cheap. I use one to brew and the other as a SCOBY hotel (like a storage unit for SCOBYs - they multiply like crazy). You'll want glass or good quality stainless steel. (Corny's fit the bill, depending on the volume you want to make.) Definitely use a wide-mouth vessel or that SCOBY is in there for good.
On Tap at The Frisky Lemur Pub: Pumpkin Spice Ale; Frisky Lemur IPA; ESB; CranApple Cider; RazBerliner
Fermenting/Conditioning/Bottled: Joyeux Noel Holiday Spiced Ale; NEIPA
On Deck: Altbier; NEIPA; Oatmeal Stout

I bought a 1 gallon jar of pickles for kombucha. Wide mouth, glass, and a gallon of pickles to eat.
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout

I use one of the 27L PET carboys from Noble Grape. I've been pumping 25L liters in it every month for over a year now and its been great
