Five Star PBW cleaner

Just wondering if anyone here has or does use this product to clean there kettles,( or other sst) ; I was given some by a friend and used it today for the first time, holy crap!!! my kettle is super clean, all the residue on the inside with very little scrubbing 100% gone, really impressed.

I picked up a little bottle from Noble Grape and have been using it to clean kegs for the most part. The brew pot is starting to look a little grimy though, so glad to hear it should go a great job cleaning it as well! To anyone else thinking about picking some up, I'd go with the bigger bottle... the little bottle goes quickly when you realize how well it works and start using it for all your cleaning.

Are you talking about starsan.... or PBW?
PBW is a cleaner, and comes as a powder.
if it's a liquid... then it's starsan (different thing... although still fantastic).

I do know that lots of the other brewers use unscented oxiclean instead of PBW.

PBW is a cleaner, and comes as a powder.

You're right! I am talking about starsan. Good to know there are other Five Star products worth checking out though. Thanks for that.

I use it as well for my kettle and for soaking carboys. It's a bit pricey, but makes cleanup a lot easier.

its even cheaper at costco. $14 for a huge box. that has lasted me almost 2 years.

I'm just using the walmart brand of oxiclean.

Don't tell me I'm paying top dollar for a product I already got and can get much cheaper.
Now I have got to research and find out if this is true.

I also do use Oxyclean when I don't have PBW, and really haven't noticed any real difference using it over PBW except I find it works faster.
Or at least I thought it did. Now you got me questioning even that.

i dont think it specifically says unscented. i think its the plain old oxyclean brand that billy mays goes on about during his crack-head infomercials. nevertheless i have been using it for 2+ years now. i also make sure i rinse well afterwards.

In addition to Sodium Percarbonate, FiveStar PBW also has a surfactant in it, which lets it get into all the small crevices to break up the organic matter easier.

Does this stuff work on the krausen rings in carboys? I usually just soak with bleach, scrub with it with a carboy brush, and then give up. If some thing actually works, I'll have to give it a try.

Although I haven't tried it, I've heard great things about PBW working with stuff like krausen rings. It's caustic, so the solution will break down the organic matter that makes up the crud. I get rid of krausen rings by filling up my carboy with a warm solution of the pink chlorinated cleaner from NG and let it soak overnight. No scrubing required. Works every time.

It does, very well. I usually let my carboys soak overnight with PBW and by morning with a quick rinse, the majority of the krausen is gone. The it's just a matter of running my carboy cleaner through it and it's spotless.

A great trick I learned when reading online to clean the krausen off of a carboy (if the rest of the carboy is clean): Put the cleaning solution in the carboy, put on a blue plastic cap from a 19L water jub (which fits the carboy perfectly), and turn the carboy upside down. You only have to use enough solution to cover the dried up krausen. Let it sit overnight, and it's done.

I've done it with Oxyclean, and it cleaned it up perfectly.
