Bottle Bomb Solution

Post by mdentremont » Thu Dec 12, 2019 5:03 pm

I thought I'd post this since it saved the life of a few of my Russian friends.

A little over a year ago, we made a RIS and used too much priming sugar. The batch turned out great, but it basically required a 2L as a designated dumping ground, where you'd pour the bottle into a growler and wait 20 mins for the foam to dissipate. Because of this inconvenience, I barely opened any bottles.

Then I had my first bomb go off. Luckily the bottle blew out from the bottom, saving my walls from the black beer, and instead I just found dried beer on the concrete floor some time later (along with a bunch of broken glass).

Instead of dumping the batch, I prepped a keg and purged the oxygen via forced CO2. I then opened and dumped each bottle into the keg, making sure to get the neck into the keg opening to minimize oxygen exposure. By the last bottle or two, the foam was overflowing out of the keg, so I was able to "cap-on-foam" with the keg lid.

After re-carbing it and letting it settle in the keezer for a week or two, I was able to confirm that oxidation was minimal, and now I am actually able to enjoy the beer!

TLDR: Dumped bottle bombs into keg to save them, seems to have worked. ImageImage

Cooling below freezing will reduce the foaming.
Why brew beer I can buy?

You can also chill and then slightly crack the cap seal to let out pressure, and the reseal again with a capper. Works pretty well.
