And a week later my Lee Valley scale crapped out. Wouldn't hold a steady reading, and was way off even if it came close to holding a reading.

No, didn't bother with any weights. Might order some at another time - I have an Amazon Prime account, so shipping is freechalmers wrote:That does look good. Re: HRM Water Profiles
Justin, did you ever get your water tested? If so where?
I need to get ours tested as it has been many years, and we are on well.
Also be interested in seeing if I should be adding anything for brewing.

Re: HRM Water Profiles
Hey guys, I'm looking to start playing around with our HRM water profile. I want to start simple since this is all foreign to me, so I was thinking of using:
5.2 pH stabilizer and campden tablets (to help lower chlorine levels that was noticeable in one of my recent batches in the form of "clove" flavour, which should not have been there from my knowledge).
Thoughts on this? From my research there seems to be mixed reviews on the 5.2 pH stabilizer, so I just want to see if my beer will benefit from it or not. Love my brews, but always looking to improve.
Thanks!

Re: HRM Water Profiles
We lived in Calgary for a number of years. Pretty hard water relative to Halifax, lots of calcium build up on shower heads etc. Also definitely more chlorine. I never really did much about the hardness, and dont even know about pH, but when planning a brew, I always just got my water out of the tap a day or 2 before...that was usually enough to let the chlorine escape (evaporate) so that it wasn't noticeable. That's probably more of a comment than it is any kind of advice....

Re: HRM Water Profiles
Never really thought of that. I've never really noticed any problem with our water until my last wheat batch, and to be honest, the clove flavor could have been some other factor other than our chlorine levels. I'm just trying to troubleshoot and get a better end product. But honestly I have never done anything to our tap water and this is the first time I noticed something.
I also add tap water to top up the primary after the boil. I feel like maybe I should use bottled water or something?

Re: HRM Water Profiles
Right or wrong, I don't know; but I never top anything up after I boil. Too paranoid about introducing bad bugs. I do my calculation on how much water I need for my batch, usually comes out pretty close at the end. Once my HLT is topped to where I want it, that's it.

Re: HRM Water Profiles
Maybe I'll look into that. I've always topped up for years because my boils are usually around 12L post boil and then top with around 8L.

Are you doing extract? I should clarify that I am doing all grain thru 3 vessels. I've never done extract.

Partial Mash - generally about half and half for Grain to DME ratio. I haven't gotten to All Grain yet, but that will soon come.

Re: HRM Water Profiles
I had a conversation about this just yesterday. I have tried all of nine-locks beer, and I find that it all has what I can only refer to is a "process-indicator". The beers all have a very faint aftertaste that I get across the board. This is no dig @ their beer, it is great, I just find that I get locked on that flavour. Do they have a different supply than the city?

I use Dartmouth City water and use this report to do my water additions (BruNWater).Peterpasha wrote:is there an updated water profile for Halifax and Dartmouth? I can't seem to find one on that monstrosity of a website re-design.
Scroll down to page 38 and it's where they give all the water reports - depending on your area.
