limp hops

Post by amartin » Sat May 19, 2012 7:58 pm

Hey all,

I won't bore you with the story of how this came about, but the short version is that a rhizome I gave away last spring has found it's way back here last night. The guy who had it last year isn't a brewer, and didn't really do much for it. It's been growing this spring, and it's tallest shoots are probably a few feet tall. However, it's somewhat limp, and doesn't seem much interested in the string I gave it to climb. I gave it a good home, fertilized it and have been watering it, but I don't know what else I should do, if anything. I don't think I'm going to cut the shorter shoots back until it seems healthier. Since I wasn't expecting this, and I have two other plants of the same variety already, it won't be the end of the world if it doesn't make it. I'd still like to see it do well though.

Any suggestions?

I think you're probably doing fine. A bit of peroxide in the water may assist it, but don't get too crazy.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

They are pretty hearty and will survive almost anywhere, so I doubt you have any thing to worry about. You could cut back the limp one and let one or two of the others grow. Mine are 3 Ft tall now due to a late start.
