Looks like I've got some reading to do...

Post by Jimmy » Sun Jul 29, 2012 6:42 pm

Picked these up the other day...I've skimmed through both, and it looks like there is some good information. What's the general consensus on these 2 books?

BCS is an excellent book.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I have Chris White's Yeast book. Everything you ever wanted to know. It says practical, but it has a lot of technical info. Really explains the "why" behind everything.

I have both books and both are referenced on a weekly basis. Both are great books.

another +1 for BCS - its the first place I go when planning to brew a style never attempted before and still go back to for reference for styles I've done a bunch of times.

I found this one on a free book table. It's not exactly Yeasts for Dummies, but if you're a mycologist it may be of interest. It has an entire chapter on brewing yeasts.

That's a nice find Kyle!

Regarding BSC and Yeast, I've yet to read a book by Brewers Publications that was bad - both of those titles are excellent.

I just started reading Yeast, myself. It's pretty cheap on amazon and eligible for free shipping if you grab another book or too. It's really informative so far.

Just finished "Brewing Better Beer: Master Lessons for Advanced Homebrewers" by Gordon Strong recently. Lots of good info on correcting errors and objectively identifying issues/improvements to be made. It gets a recommendation for sure.

For that book's advice on how to use a bourbon barrel, it's worth it's weight in gold.

If Jimmy had set things up correctly he could have gotten a kickback.

I decided I needed both yeast and BCS, picked them both up from Amazon. I would recommend chapters if anyone is still looking, they estimated the shipping to be early October... wtf?

Must have had a run on them. I ordered BCS and Designing Great Beers last Friday, received them on Tuesday with free shipping.

Have you had a chance to read Designing Great Beers yet? I found it a good read/reference.
